State Park Camping Question

We are planning a trip with another family in July who don't have a trailer but will be bringing their boat. They plan to tent camp, we will use our trailer. Do state parks let people without trailers stay on trailer lots? We want to be close to them so we can share our trailer etc.

I know I should call a state park to ask but some are still closed for winter.

Down here they allow them to set up on a pad some of our parks have a tent area also. Many of our State parks also have cabins for rent

Each park has different rules, I have been to some in Arkansas and Texas that have a tent pad at every RV site and then some that do not allow a tent

Looks like both parks we are considering offer tent and rv use on any powered site. Now just to fine one with availability.

So if there is no water on site at the camp ground where do I find it? I really don't want to fill my tank at home. When we got to Watkins Glen I was going to find a local campground and see if I could fill up there first, but I didn't think state parks would be without water.

Still have lots to learn.

Some do and some don't. We have some primitive camping on the outer banks in NC. From what I understand is they have port a potties and no water. We do have other state parks that have places to fill or may share a tap between multiple sites. I would contact the park service or if you are staying at the track, contact the track and find out. I know Dover had water trucks top you off but they came at a cost. Charlotte has some sites with water and power so each place is different.

I stayed at Watkins Glen last Sept. they have water you can fill up with close to the check in station. They do not have many sites that a 29 footer will fit in. I was in a 25 TT last year and the spots are tight!

Most of the state parks I have been to have water spigots placed every so often around the park, Find one close to the road, stop and fill up BEFORE going to your site.

If it's a new park that I haven't been to, I always ask when i'm checking in. Some places have the water hookups by the shower houses, some have them by the dump station, some have water poles every 10 sites or so, others just have a single 100' garden hose attached to the checkin station.

Thanks everyone, we booked through reserve America found two sites right next to each other at Lake Chapman in Pa.

I called about water today and they suggested the same as Tim suggested.

Lots to learn but I'm sure most of this stuff will become clear when I actually get out and use the trailer.

I asked when we booked and they limited the sites we could choose. They said out site could take a triple axle fit wheel so we should fit fine. We are also on the outside of the track so we will back all the way up.

Coming from ontario to pa I would put at least a little water in your tank for things like bathroom stops on the way. We usually travel with about 1/3 tank fresh water. Also if this is your first trip, I would sanitize your fresh water system before going so it is ready to go when you get there.

I also carry a hundred feet of hose. I try to set up within that distance of a hydrant if possible. The wife likes to use water! Just remember if you fill up again your grey water may go past capacity. Had that happen on one of our first trips and water backed up into shower pan. Had to use a bucket and put down toilet. Lesson learned.

Tim,
I was at a state campground at 1,000 Islands in NY. They had water every 10 sites or so. We were over 100 feet away and I only have 75. The fellow parked next to the site had put a dual spigot on and he hooked up "permanently". Along comes a 38' Class A and I see him unrolling hose and starting to hook up. I said to the friend with me..."oh no they're not, this can't be happening..." So, I walk over to the water spigot and the fellow with the Class A says to me, "do you need some water too?" He was only filling his tank, which of course was over 100 gallons. After that he filled me and my fellow camper up. I'm thinking about getting a couple of those roll-up hoses (look like fire hoses) from CW. Light and might be worth it. I am planning on staying at a few state campgrounds and a few COE parks this year so they may be worth the price to have. Also, I saw they make a rubber fitting for those spigots with no hookups, you know, the straight ones like in a sink. May pick that up too.

Travel well,
Jim

I have both and use them often - work well.

Wow. I'm used to Tennessee State Parks. The majority of our state parks have electric and water at each site unless you are camping in a tent campground. Some have sewer also, and they are adding more and more of those. I'm surprised at hearing about that many state parks with limited fresh water hookups.
