Looking at driving to the VFW National Convention in Louisville, KY in July. Any suggestions on campgrounds or places to avoid?

Clif:

If you don't mind driving a ways there is a fairly nice state park in Bardstown, KY. It's called "My Old Kentucky Home State Park". It's about 35 miles or so southeast of Louisville. We spent several nights in this park last October on our way to the CrossRoads repair center. The park is relatively small with small sites. And some of the sites are not very level. I had a tough time getting our trailer in the site that we had reserved, but I did. I would stay in this park again. I don't think that you would have any problem getting your trailer into the sites. If I remember correctly they list the length of the sites on their reservation website.

If you like to tour the distilleries there are several in the area. We toured a few on our visit. The Bernheim Forest is also worth seeing.

Thanks for the reply,

Sounds real nice but my wife has to be in DT Louisville each day Fri-Wed and I don't relish a 70mi drive twice each day(she's the conventioneer, I'm the driver). I'm thinking of the Good Sam park just over the bridge from DT. Anyone have any experience.

If you are retired military, Camp Carlson, on Fort Knox is nice and close to Louisville. Much cheaper than civilian parks.

Not retired military. It looks like the choices within a reasonable distance of Louisville (less than 50mi)are slim unless you want to be in a RV parking lot (no room for awning!!!) next to a railroad track with a homeless camp across the tracks. Doesn't sound too good. Better check Ky gun laws.

Noticed on the web there is a park called Add-More in Clarksville, IN. Seemed ok on their website. Sounds like you wanted something north of Louisville. South of Louisville is a KOA in Shepherdsville, KY. I have never been to either one but think either would be fine. If you are serious about gun laws in KY just ask. I've been a police officer here for the last 15 years.

Thanks, I looked up the Add-More and it looks nice from the satellite picture. The website doesn't work???It has a UK extension(Great Britain)???? I'll call them next week and see what the rates are. I'm still in the looking stage so have some time.

I looked up the Ky gun laws, love them. In my brief scan one anomaly stood out and I may not have seen it correctly. No concealed carry in a bar but open carry allowed????

I think this is accurate. No carry at all in bars.

Places in Kentucky where firearms cannot be carried, with or without a permit, include:

Law enforcement facilities
Jails
Courtrooms
Airports
Meeting places of any governing board or body
Schools
Places that serve alcohol (except restaurants)

This may also be helpful.

States that honor Kentucky’s carry permits include: Alabama, Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, Colorado, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, New Hampshire, New Mexico, North Carolina, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Vermont, Virginia, West Virginia and Wyoming.

Kentucky honors permits from every state except Illinois, Vermont and Wisconsin.
