Us rt 50

Has anyone traveled US50 ("The backbone of America") through the heartland and western part of the country? Is it an RV friendly road? I'm thinking about hauling the bikes on a cross-country trip on RT 50. Gas stops for my TV are a concern as well as pot-hole riddled roads...

Thanks,

I've driven on US 50 in Nevada and California in rental cars, and I wouldn't hesitate to take my rig on it out there.

Traveled it from Utah to Ca. one year. No problem with the road, no fuel stops between towns, so you do need to plan accordingly. Experienced a late snow fall in parts of Nevada in late May.

Did US 50 from Eastern Kansas to Western Utah through Colorado last spring. Very good road with light truck traffic.

Road surface much better shape than most Interstates in this country.

Towed US50 from Dodge City, KA to Sacramento, CA. No problem with road conditions and enjoyable towing until curvy slow going for a short while west of Lake Tahoe. No big deal. As Larry mentioned, we planned our fuel stops accordingly through Nevada as I believe I read somewhere that the stretch of US50 was labeled the "loneliest road in America". Loved it as there wasn't much traffic and really "wide open spaces". Camped at Ely and at Fallon along the route in Nevada.

Enjoy!

Do you recall what the longest distance between a fuel stop was. My TV is diesel..

While travelling in the southwest and west I carried 2 5gal cans of diesel (filled to 4 gal). We used one can on only one occasion in Neveda. Transfered fuel with a small battery operated pump from Amazon.
Pumped saved the back extra fuel saved the day.

Eureka,Nv to Carson City,Nv is about 250 miles. I was able to do it with no problem with my Cruiser and 05 Dmax.

There may have been fuel stops between but I do not recall for sure.

Last fuel stop in Utah will be Delta. From there to Ely, NV is 151 Miles. Next fuel is in Eureka, 76 miles, then Fallon, another 173 miles. This is all per the Rand McNally Road Atlas. When I did it with my Tundra gasser I planned on about 200 miles range towing per tank. Filled up in Ely, topped off in Eureka, then filled in Fallon. Now with my RAM diesel I plan on 350 miles range . Flat out love my truck!!

This morning I finished reading Philip Caputo's book "The Longest Road" which is his experience towing a vintage Airstream from Key West to the Arctic Ocean and back to Texas. Good read! In it he mentions that it was Life Magazine in 1986 that dubbed US50 thru Nevada as "The loneliest road in America". Also noticed that designation in the Atlas. Cheers.

I am doing the same run this year Jerry. Mid September, leaving Atlanta and headed to Crested Butte for the KTM Rally for a week. Bikes in back.

I will then leave Crested Butte and head back to Denver to ride RMNP, then back to Atlanta.

I'm taking extra diesel but am confident I'll find diesel stops fairly frequently due to all the cross state truck traffic and RV'ers.

Cheers,

matt.
