Question about rubber cap

What causes the rubber cap on the hub to expand like its pushing out?

Is it that way all the time, or just after a trip?

Only ofter approx hour. Once we get to destination for awhile is returns to normal.

Same wheel for the last 3 trips.

Looks like the heat of the hub and axle heats up, expands and pushes out the rubber cup. After it cools the pressure returns to normal.
I'd make sure the wheel bearings are packed properly and are not overheating.

Its one of the wheel on the new axle that Lippert installed at this years factory rally. So I guess anything possible.

I was just wanting to ensure I was not going to be told it was "functioning as designed"

I agree that there is probably pressure building up from heat causing it to expand. If it was me, I would pull that brake drum and inspect their grease job. Just for my own peace of mind.

I would call Lippert directly and ask them. I am sure they probably have a record of the work they did on your camper. Yours was the only one that had a axle change out at the rally.

Crossroads responded right away - called me and they are going to let me know how they want to handle it.

Response from Lippert.

I read it like CR is contacting Lippert about it because they don't know and found out your question had been answered by Lippert. Or got the same answer you did and may or may not send it to you.

Well I hope not. If it was normal I would think the other 3 would do it.
After 45 min on road it pushes out...when cools off it go back to normal.

Did you take the cap off to see what it looks like inside??
If it's full of grease that may be the issue.

That's was thinking that as well. Since it is new, it may have more grease than the other ones?

Some place I've heard of this before. Seems like they talked about making a pin hole to relieve the pressure. You would think it might throw grease but there was no mention of that.

I still think it should come apart for inspection.

I would not put a pin hole in the cap. I am sure I would be cleaning grease off everything behind the cap the first trip after I installed the pin hole...
