2007 and newer Duramax problem.

FYI
I received this message from a fellow Crossroads owner about the 2007 and newer Diesels.

Quote:
Duramax Diesels 2007 and newer have a problem. The three bolts holding the muffler to the catalytic converter break due to the extreme heat when the exhaust system heats up to burn off pollutants in the converter. One person on the Duramax Forum on the internet had his go at 38k miles.

Just here in one campground I know of three trucks with the problem and we personally know of 4 others. Local GM in FT Mead, Florida;GM in Ellicott City; and National GM Customer Service all claim to no NUTHING. There are no bulletins or recalls but seven of us here can't be odd men out so check your muffler bolts.

When the bolts all fail--if you are lucky-- the muffler drops about halfway to the ground and leans over on the drive shaft which is not pleasant. Bolts and gasket cost about $50. The bolts have spleens on the heads and are tough to remove. You'll need heat. Propane helped but we had to drill them out. Acetylene may do better. There is some talk of using harder bolts. Also of using regular bolts without the spleen. That would make them easier to remove the next time they fail after the next 40k or so.
Problems can also be reported at http://www.nhtsa.gov/

Between this and several other recent, BIG recalls...I am losing faith in my GM products...

Maybe I should look at the 2004 Chevy 2500 I saw...older can be better, right?

I searched the Duramax Forum and couldn't find it. I also searched NHTSA and couldn't find anything about it there either. The 2006 and early 2007 was the LBZ Duramax. Late 2007 - 2010 was the LMM Duramax. The current LML began in 2011. The exhaust is different on each one.

ewbldavis, I am hoping older is better!! I'm getting there quick!! SleepyT, I work with a 2011 Duramax 6.6. The owner had the exhaust assy replaced last October from catalytic to tail resonator due to a "falling out". Good luck.

SleepyT. This is what could happen when you buy an off brand truck like a Chevy or Dodge.

Got under my truck this morning. The only place I could see that would fail is the connection between the cat tail piece and the muffler. There is a metal cuff not a muffler clamp where the two meet. Is this cuff the piece that is failing and causing the problem???

Coopers dad...What did you mean ,please explain "GOT LEMONED"

Ralph..."FALLING OUT" your co-workers exhaust sys fell out ? or just came apart. The reason I ask is because the cat converter is mounted between two cross members, and there is a body mount connection to the lead piece (pipe) to the muffler. I have a hard time seeing the muffler hitting the ground. Just asking !!!! Also please explain.

Wantabe....I would like to hear whatever you could find out about this, due to the fact you work on these vehicles.

It would be bad enough to have the truck damaged but it would really suck to have my 5er damaged at the beginning of the season. After this winter that would put me over the edge, and some people have told me that I have been TEETERING for years..

Mark....Some people can't afford the name brands.

Tommy, This post was sent to me from Ken and Sarah. It happened to Ken, so you could talk to him at the rally next month.

Talked to Ken and he said the three bolts and NOT the cuff is what has been failing. His advise is change out the three bolts every 30,000 miles. There are no alerts on GM site as of yet, but Ken says there will be shortly as more of these bolts break. The muffler will NOT fall to the ground but will lean into the drive shaft. I will be changeing mine out shortly.

PS....Mark thanks for posting this info, I am sure it will save Chevy & GMC drivers many headaches.

Glad you found out what the exact problem was Tommy. Sounds like a cheap fix. Would SS bolts last longerr??

So now the question begs, has this been fixed on newer models like mine?

You have a new truck. The problem is with the bolts rusting over a few years. Being new you won't have an issues like this.
