Looking at trading in my 2001 Ram 5.9 for a new 2012 w/6.7 diesel. Wondering if anyone has the 2012 yet and how they like it. I liked my 5.9 but DW thinks it is too loud and can't carry on a conversation when we are traveling (guess that could be a plus) any way liked my 5.9 mileage and wondering how it is with the new 6.7 six speed automatic. Any pros or cons appreciated.

always been a Dodge guy and I love the new 2012 HD, but due to the price

I don't have one yet, but will one day.

I'm pretty good friends

with the owner of the local Dodge Dealership who has been selling more

HD trucks then ever before. His lot looks like a used Ford dealership.

Anyways to get to your question my neighbor bought a 2011 with the 6.7

and he loves it, but he says he only gets around 15mpg not towing

anything. I'm not sure what he gets towing his 33ft TT. I will ask him

the next time I see him.

The Dodge dealership I was talking

about sells a programmer and will take off the environmental crap that

they have added so it doesn't smoke for about 1500 dollars. Upon this

being done guys say they are getting around 22 mpg which is what I get

with my 03. The dealership will honor the warranty even with the stuff

taken off and the programmer added. Not sure if other dealers would do

2007 dodge cummings-they put the smogg junk on the 6.7 ltr ones like mine and had a lot of trouble when it first came out,believe some dealers were still selling old type diesel fuel,but has been pretty good since 2010,if i needed a new truck would get another dodge before they have to start putting the rest of the smog treatment junk on them,and yes the dw likes how quite it is
around 12-13 towing mpg,18-22 not towing hiway,15 city,still stock

I get around 12 towing now with my 5.9 and cant complain about mileage without towing. I really dont like all the junk they put on new trucks now. I use my truck just for towing or making quick trips to Home Depot if needed. So a new truck would probably last a long time. I keep looking at the price of diesel but if you enjoying traveling, you just compensate. $40,000 would sure buy a lot diesel if I keep my old truck. My father-in-law is retired from Chrysler so I can get the employee discount, if that even amounts to anything, anymore. Thanks for the inputs

Shoe, have a 2011 that has the newer 6.7 HO cummins (400 hp, 800 fp) in a 4500 with the aisin 6 spd and 4.44 rears (4x4). Love the truck so far, get 9.5 to 10.5 when towing the 14K pound PF36SK. I use mine for the business and haul several trailers with itand therefore went with the lower gearing. Truck is not loud.

Brother-in-law just bought a 2012 Dodge 3500 dually (and a Komfort 3650 fiver). Went with him to pick up the trailer and it is an awesome truck! Very quiet (she will like it), much quieterthan my 2008 2500 with the same 6.7L engine. Six speed auto with manual shift, engine brake, plus great towing mirrors (similar to Ford) with the wide convex at the bottom, and factory brake controller. Installed a BW convertible hitch and Roll-n-Lock cover. Wife is pushing me to trade...

My son recently bought the same HO 6.7. He loves it, very quiet and tons of pulling power. Several weeks ago, I was pulling his 25' toy trailer with bumper hitch and needed to merge into traffic at approx 25-30 mph. I got on it too hard and spun the rear wheels! Unbelievable power, even with the 3.40 rear end.

Mine is a 2004.5 with the 325 CTD 4X4. If I lost this truck, I would get another one exactly like it. The tranny needs a rebuild and I have had to fix the vent control inside the dash. But it has been just such a good tow vehicle. Great mileage and it runs like a hot rod.

I was looking at getting my tranny rebuilt if I keep my truck. This is weird I think my Vent control is messed up also. Stuck in floor vent mode, was gong to look at it today. What was wrong with yours. Tranny rebuilt on mine is around 1800, with new Torque Converter and Transmission rebuilt.

I had a 2005 that was trouble free mileage on it non towing was 18 to 20 mpg. Rep;aced it with a 2007 6.7 mega cab automatic no this is a lot heavier truck than the quad cab and built on the long wheel base frame mileage is between 16.6 and 18. Towing is the same. Motor is quiter like the exhaust brake and like the auto because Janet can now drive it. She could not handle the old six speed. I have no trouble out of any of them

Looking at the dodge crew cab, now have to decide short bed or long. I like the short bed, because it doesnt make such a long truck. Someone said a long bed rides smoother, is there really that much difference.

Having had both the longer wheel base is smoother riding, I miss the shorter wheel base when backing into a spot a lot easier to manuver

I was thinking a long wheel base may be smoother, but with the crewcab shortbed the wheel base is 149inches, the Regular cab longbed has a wheel base of 140. So shouldn't a crewcab SB ride better that a Reg. cab LB. Just trying to figure all this out.

My 2500 has the short bed and the "Mega Cab" which is very roomy with lots of storage. Only drawback is when you have to haul 12' lumber, it sticks out quite a bit but that doesn't happen very often so I'm OK with it. Plus it's a little easier to find a good parking space with the shorter bed. Don't think I would buy the longer one just for the ride....not that much difference.

I am with HORKEN. We have a 2004.5 Ram 2500 Crew Cab & Short

Box. I love it.

Mileage: On our first pull out to Montana we were approached 3

times at the Diesel Pump by folks that had traded in their old Ram's for new.

Their message was to hang on the 2004 because there new RAM's mileage sucked!!

The 2004.5 gets:Towing in a cross wind = 7-8 mpg (torque converter locked in and

chipped to stock).

Towing on the flat & no wind = 10-15mpg (torque converter

locked in and chipped to +30 HP).

Not towing 18-22mpg (torque converter locked in and chipped to +90HP).



I would look for a low mileage RAM pre 2007.



Our friend took his new Ram west towing a TT. He babied it and

choked it up with carbon so bad he needed to take in into a dealership for

repair. So, give her the reins once in awhile and distribute the Diesel Dust.

Go do someresearch on the 4th Generation 2010 and up trucks and see for yourself some of the issues they are having.My wife has been after me for a year to get a new Dodge 3500 and I will not buy one unless I was towing heavy at least 75% of the time. You drive the new ones around town all the time and they are going to soot up. AsKamper Dave said, you either use it hard or it will soot up on you. Here is one site below you can take a look at under the 4thGeneration section at the top. Of course you can make them into a good running truck that will get decent mileage if you do the DPF deletes but then you are going to void your warranty.

A Chevy or Ford won't soot up - DPF and Regen of the DFP eliminates this problem. My exhaust pipe is soot free with the DPF.

I never saidthey would.The post is about the 2010 and up Dodges not Ford or Chevy. The Dodge will go to the Urea injection in 2013 and I am sure that will make them on par with the other two. But you still have all the emissions crap that is new technology and none of them are perfected as of yet. Edited by: Hunter11
