5th wheel & 5.5 ft. box

Is there anybody here on the forum that has a 5.5 ft. box, and towing a 5th wheel?
If so, what are you using for a hitch, and how are you making out with it?

Our daughter tows a Sunset Trail 270BH fifth wheel with a 5.5' F150 Ecoboost. She uses a sliding hitch (I can get the make and model if you want). She has been doing this for a year and a half without any issues.

Due to the position of the hitch in the bed of the truck being too close to the cab, she cannot see the hitch to hitch up. Since she is single she has no significant other to spot for her, so she uses a portable back-up camera that a friend made for her. She hangs it on the headrest of the middle rear seat, opens the window, and she can see to hitch up. She made a video about the camera and it's on YouTube on the RV Travel channel.

Yes, I would appreciate that.

Here are two pictures for you. The first is a close-up of the hitch, the second is of the rig. It is parked at the end of our driveway temporarily while it awaits winter storage.

The hitch is a Pull Rite Superglide. It slides out automatically when you make a corner. While we were practicing the back-up routine, we did it very slowly and if you crank the wheel hard enough, the trailer will touch the cab. We stopped before this happened, but proved that it can be done.

Our daughter would prefer a truck with a bigger box, but is torn by the fact that a longer truck will not fit into her garage and she likes to park inside. She does not have a lot of storage in her trailer and it would be nice to have more storage in the truck box. We have an 8 foot box on our truck and like the extra space it gives us.

If you want any more pictures or info, let me know.

Lloyd are you having problems with the Reese? Is it a slider? You can convert to a Reese manual slider base for around $400.
The Pullrite is a nice hitch depending on model around $1000 to $1400 new.
I have the Reese slider and have used it twice in 6
seasons.
I have the short box on my F250

No problems AL. Just doing some checking, and yes, my Reese is a manual slider.

Why wouldn't you go for a longer box so you don't have to deal with a sliding hitch?

I think you are assuming I want a 5.5 ft. box. I don't. As far as the 8 ft. box, the big cab isn't available in that. Even if it was I wouldn't buy one. You would need to much space for maneuvering/turning.

We have a 2015 F250 with a full cab and an 8 foot box. We love the extra space in the box, and the cab is as big as they get. Yes, it is a bit bigger and does not turn in a small space, but we have decided that the extra space is worth it. We usually take up more than one parking space at the mall, but that's part of the deal.

We take our rig to Florida every winter and then the truck is our only transportation while we are there. We make it work.

They must have changed it then.
What I see for the 8 ft box is the SuperCab being the biggest available.
The SuperCrew isn't available with the 8 ft. box.

I guess I am missing something here. How many different cab configurations are available? I always figured there were three - no back seat, a small back seat (often with doors that open the other way) and a good sized back seat. Is there more than that?

I think there is a slight mix up here. Lloyd, correct me if I'm wrong.

Lloyd, was referring to a F150 Crew Cab. It is NOT available in a 8' box.

Loneoak is referring to a F 250/ 350 Crew Cab. It IS available in a 8' Box.

Am I Correct????

I never knew the 150 didn't come with an 8' box. You learn something new every day! I guess since the 150 is not on our radar, we never even looked at it.
