Another EcoBoost Advice Post

Hi All -

So I've read a number of posts on the EcoBoost, but still want to ask more questions.

I'm this close (read very) to pulling the trigger on a new truck. Trading in my 6.2L gas F250, on a 2016 F150 Supercrew XLT Sport, with the max tow package and the 3.5L V6 EcoBoost.

I'm pulling my ST28BH, which has the GVWR 9500lbs. I've got a good WD hitch setup.

My questions are:
1) Will I be ok with just the max tow, or should I look and try (hard to find) the max tow + max payload? The truck I'm looking at has the 3.55 rear end.
2) The dealer isn't keen on upgrading me to E-rated tires (which I have on my current F250). Will I be ok with the LT C-rated tires the truck comes with?
3) Anything else I should consider before I pull the trigger?

I love my current Ford, but I'm getting a great deal on trading it. I'd love to get a diesel, but don't tow enough to justify it (<5000kms/yr). From what I've read, sounds like I'll be happy with the power out of the Eco. Just not sure what to expect about the rest of my towing experience.

Thanks!

I'd get the max payload and get the 3.73 rear. It's going to be a hard search but it's well worth it..Have both on my F150 and not sorry I have both. Definitely need the E tires also.

I have the same setup on my truck that Mark has.
I was going to trade trucks this year for another just like it, but didn't because I couldn't get the same packages. They no longer offer max payload (I believe), 3.73 gears, or the 17 in. E rated tires. Without being able to get those three things it was a deal breaker for me and I backed out.

Sounds like you have a fair amount of weight tied on the back. You might want to reconsider.

Well coming from a couple of Ford guys, I see you're getting completely different advice above. lol, I've been a Chevy guy all along but I almost went for a Ford on my last purchase. The one I test drove ran like a race horse (5.0L gas.) but it was missing a lot of options I wanted.

The sales guy on the Ford lot told me himself, "Stay away from the Ecoboost!.. They have half dozen of them in the shop here now & don't know what to do with them."
They were having major engine problems, Maybe things have changed & they have since addressed the issues they were having but I have heard several negative stories since backing up my opinion.

If you like the Ford & don't pull too much, I would stick with a V8, 5.0L gas. It's got plenty of HP & torque for the engine size plus proven reliability. One nicely optioned should accommodate your pulling needs.

Good luck
CC

I have the 3.5 Ecoboost Max Tow with 3.55 gears. I've had it since last September, and have towed my ST26RB about 1,500 miles so far. Plenty of power. My weights are about the same as yours, and is 30'2" long. I have the large back seat (super crew?)' and the short bed. My length is fine with the short bed, but if your rig is over 31 feet, I would definitely try to find a long bed.

As to the engines, you have a couple guys here that just answered you that have been using them for some time now and appear pleased. Mine is new, and I would hope any problems that was occurring years ago have been resolved.

By the way, I had low ply tires on large 20'inch rims, and had some sway. I added Firestone air bags and 10 ply rated E tires, and it sits really firm now, with no rear sag. Of course I have a WD bar. I get anywhere from 14-17 mpg around town, and 18-21 on highway. When pulling, I average 9 mpg. Good luck with your decision.

I don't see where you figure there is two entirely different answers being given???

Also, could you state/post what problems you have been told the Eco-Boost is suppose to be having.
I have kept pretty track of the Eco-Boost in my area and have not heard any stories like that.
If fact, talking with one of the service managers (who also owns one) at the dealership I purchased from, said they have not experienced any issues with them to date.

I should add, when I was looking to trade, all the packages I have on my present truck, an XLT, weren't available on that model any more, but if I remember right all or most ops. were available on the FX4. That is their work truck I believe.

Thanks guys.

I'm trying to get the dealer to put E rated tires on it as part of the deal. I guess where I'm wondering is how different ,y towing experience will be vs. My current F250. The F250 towing capacity is something like 12,200 in my current configuration. And it tows fine, but I find even the 6.2L gasser works hard in the mountains. plus the mileage when I'm not towing is not great.

I'm thinking the Eco will give me a better experience for sure when not towing and it should be similar to my F250 (with maybe a bit more power) when I'm hitched up.

The Fx4 in my configuration is rated for 11,700 lbs., more if two wheel drive. My guess is that the biggest difference you will see is the long bed vs short bed, unless you can find a long bed in the Ecoboost. But then long beds are that much tougher to park and maneuver...give and take.

If you do go with the Ecoboost, you will love the tow/haul mode and the sport mode for windy roads and downhills when not hooked up. Great acceleration, but you probably know that from a test drive.

I am getting a 6.5' box for sure. Dogs and bikes ride in the box so I need the extra space!

I'm amazed that Ford wouldn't include E rated tires with the max tow package. Just as Lloyd says, not sure I can get both the max tow and max payload on the same truck in the 2016 model lineup. From what I can tell the only difference though is the upgraded wheels and tires. Like I said I'm trying to negotiate that upgrade into the deal.

Do you happen to know if you can also get the 17 in. wheels and tires, or are you stuck with 20 or 22 in.?

Also, do you know when they started building and offering them again?

Not at all. I just can't justify the extra $12,000 to get a diesel. The 6.2l gasser I have in my F250 is just ok towing. I think I'll like the Eco boost better from a power perspective. Just not 100% convinced on the rest of the truck infrastructure.

I had a 2003 Duramax (purchased new) that I traded in on the Eco-Boost.
So far I can't tell to much difference in the power, if any. It handles the weight as well also.

LT245/70R17E BSW All-Terrain Tires

I believe it started with the 2016 models
