Finally broke down and got a Diesel
After being on here reading about how well diesels pull I broke down and bought me one. I searched for a month until I found a brand new 2012 Dodge 3500 single rear axel automatic transmission 4X2. I think the planets aligned up because I stole this truck I don't know if it was because it was the last day of the month or it was a 2012 but I talked them down and my purchase price was $32,999. I was looking at trucks with the vinyl floors and seats and used until I found this one. I cant wait until Friday our first of two big trips this month.

Great deal, you will be happy towing. But it will be hard to keep the speed down, which could become an issue with ST tires on the trailer.

Ooh pretty. You will love it but break it in right. That was the hardest part for me. And once you tow, you will not be able to wipe that grin off your face. Enjoy.

You'll never regret getting the diesel. It is worlds of difference towing, especially in hilly country.

Congrats! You'll never go back to a gasser. Take good care of that Cummins engine and it will last a long time.
Did it come the integrated engine brake?

I never drove a diesel as a matter of fact I didn't even test drive or start the truck until after I bought it. My wife was following me home from the dealer and she had to call me on the cell phone and tell me to slow down, I didn't realize I was doing 85 mph. The engine was so quiet and so smooth the first thing I thought of is I am really going to need to pay attention while towing. I do not like to go much over 65 when towing. Yes, it does have the engine brake.

Ken, that's what the cruise control is for.
As far as your speed when towing--remember, your trailer tires are only rated for 65 mph.

Buying without test driving, now that is brave. Glad it's working out for ya. Remember you need to keep it slow and easy for the first 500 miles. Not sure if ram is the same but chevy manual recommends keeping it to 50 mph or below for the first 500 miles and not to tow until you hit 500 miles. It also recommended keeping th d first 500 miles towing down to 50 mph. Hardest 1000 miles of my life....well a little less as the truck had 245 miles on it when I picked it up.

Welcome to the oil burner crowd!! You will love the new ride and I agree with previous posts that you may all of a sudden find in a year or two that your trailer is just too light to tow with a diesel and it's time for a bigger one!!
Although one thing you will find with a lighter TT behind your diesel is that your fuel mileage is going to be excellent when towing.

Fuel mileage played a big part in my decision with my 6.0 liter Chevy pulling my trailer I was averaging 8 miles per gallon and with a 25 gallon tank I was stopping for fuel way to much. Thanks Anaro for bringing up the break I just read through the manual and Dodge does not require what the Chevy does but I am going to still take it easy. Dodge actually recommends towing a moderate load to help speed up the break in period. I cant wait until Friday for the trip it is a very easy tow no hills and it only 2 hours from the house. This should be a good break in trip I will take my time and enjoy the drive.

I would like to see a video of his face as he started out and then got on the highway. The smile just keeps getting bigger and bigger

Awesome looking truck.. You won't even know your towing, until you look in your rear view mirrors... . Enjoy your new toy.

Congrats...it's a looker, even for a Dodge! You will enjoy the diesel and the fact that you will wear the TT out before that engine if you treat it right.

I have heard both schools of thought on break-in. The other is to drive it like you intend to right from the beginning.
