New tow vehicle & our first truck

Well, after 8 weeks of waiting (new order, custom build), our Ram 1500 Outdoorsman finally arrived and we got it today. It looks really nice and drives great. I can't believe how quiet the cabin is and the tech package is awesome. Hope it serves us well for a few years and does the job I'm expecting it to with the ST270BH.

Nice truck, enjoy it. We are considering a 2013 ram 3500 diesel leftover right now.

Great truck. I wish Ford would bundle their Sync package in a similar setup. That touch screen system is great. Great color..OSU Scarlet!

Congrats and welcome to the RAM world. I've had mine for three months now and am more impressed with it as time goes by. Agree with what Mark said about the Sync and touch screen. Its' first major tow is coming up NLT 4/4 for our usual two month spring trip. Last year we logged 8,500 miles. Looking forward to improved performance and fewer fuel stops than with the Tundra. Will try to keep stats and make a trip report upon our return.

If you're asking me rather than Jeff, no air bags. Was told they would be available sometime later. May look into the possibility of a retro if I need them for my as yet to be determined 5er.

Thanks for the comment. No, I didn't opt for the $1700 air bag suspension, considered it to be way overpriced and a detriment to payload capacity. I liked the fact that the Outdoorsman trim came with extra-heavy duty shocks in the rear, figured it would help keep it more level and absorb some of the road imperfections during towing. I considered the Eco-diesel at first but the fact of a brand new power train with no history, and the fact that its a foreign engine scared me right out that option too.

5.7 liters of Hemi power all the way!

Nice ride! Should tow that 270BH with ease.

That is the plan

For anyone curious about the 8-speed transmission, all I can say is wow. I'm used to driving Hondas and I've always thought they shifted seamlessly. This Ram is right on par, I would say better, than any Honda I've ever had (so far). Time will tell and I will keep everyone posted on how this truck performs. I have 2 short trips planned locally, then a 3000 mile round-trip excursion from Ohio to S. Dakota and back, mostly via I-90.

Let us know what your real world MPGs are towing. Very intrigued how this setup stacks up to the F150 EcoBoom.

Nobody's more curious about this than I am but don't expect to get decent mileage until this thing has at least 10k on the engine. I know Rams are thirsty, but twin turbos can be too. Mind me asking how your Ford is setup; gear ratio, tow package, ect...?

I have a odd build sheet for my F150. Not the heavy duty, but it does have the tow package. It came with the integrated brake controller, rear camera, transmission cooler, but 3.55 gears. I think the only things I'm missng from the HD upgrade are extended mirrors,10 ply tires and of course, the 3.73s.

The 3.73s would increase my tow capacity, but the mpg's would hurt me the other 300+ days a year I drive with no trailer.

I bought the slide on tow mirrors and did upgrade the 17 LT tires to 10 plys over the winter.

Super Light trailer so it works for me..

This is what is included in the HD payload pkg.:

Heavy Duty Payload pkg.
i) 17" High Capacity 7 lug aluminum rim
ii) Heavy Duty Shock absorbers
iii) 9.75 inch gear set
iv) Upgraded springs, radiator, and auxiliary transmission oil cooler
v) 3.73 limited slip axle
vi) LT245/75R17E BSW a/t tires

So you are probably missing more than you think.

I ordered ours to get what I wanted, most notably:

5.7L Hemi
Heavy duty cooling
Extra heavy duty rear shocks (and depending on the squat still may put helper air bags inside the coil springs)
17" 10-ply E load-rated tires
Integrated brake controller
Rear camera
3.92 anti spin rear diff
Front & rear park assist

I did not opt for the air suspension (took payload down too far) or for the trailer tow side mirrors (we garage it and Dumbo wouldn't fit, my standard side mirrors are auto dim, power fold w/LED puddle lamps and turn signals which I like better anyway).

We pick up our ST270BH on April 7th. Dealership is bucking me on the amount of time they will spend with me (they think it will be 1-1/2 hrs). Little do they know what I have in store for them when I arrive. I warned the lady that we were new to travel trailers and that we would be taking extra time and that I will not be rushed. Oh I hope everything is right with this thing when we get it.

3.92s wow. that'll haul anything! Your going to love the integrated brake controller. Really adds to the "I don't feel the trailer back there" feeling.
