A few years ago at the RV museum in Indiana they had a few there. I will say the same thing i said then - Why? They also had a Oldsmobile Tornado with the rear wheels off connected to a camper to demonstrate weight distribution hitches. I believe that was Reese Hitches. Also there was a Volkswagen Beetle With a 5th wheel hitch on it roof hooked up to a single axle 5th wheel.

Because you can does not mean you should!

They had a mini RV show at the time and were trying to sell them. I do not remember a video but someone asked Why - you have a 1 ton truck with a 5th wheel with-just guessing - 1000# - 1200# hitch weight as the display model. The salesman was saying something about how the camper would ride so much better.

Cost a lot of money:

"Depending on options and customizations, the Automated Safety Hitch System could range in price from $10,000 to $11,000, including everything needed (such as a customized class five hitch rated for 30,000 pounds) for your vehicle to pull your trailer."

It looks like good concept, except pay attention at backing up video how it destroys rear tires.

This unit has hydraulic brakes, steerable axle, automated coupling system and its own power source. I wonder if it would be considered a “trailer” in some states making it illegal. They probably thought of that but just wondering.

That was my first thought as well. In Minnesota, for instance, you cannot have a trailer, of any length behind a 5th wheel, making it two trailers.

You mean that those MN. fisherman can't pull a boat behind their 5th wheel?

In Manitoba we’re allowed as long as lead trailer is a 5th wheel. Load is not longer than 75’ and combined weight of the two trailers does not exceed double of the tow vehicles GVW.

We can, but it can't exceed 70 feet. That means something pretty short.
