Trailer gain

Curious to know what trailer gain some of you run? My first trailer , 2017 Shasta Oasis 21ck, I set the gain set at 5.5 and they pulled really good but did not lock up. My new Sunset Trail I have the gain set at 10.0 and I knew they needed adjusting. I did that today and they still don't pull as good as my other TT. I did all four tires so that there was just a slight drag, so I think they are well adjust. I have Dexter axles. Also, I only have 600 miles on my TT.

Run mine between 5.0 and 6.0 depending if I’m on the interstate or stop and go traffic.

I have mine set at 6.5 and no issues with the stock Ford controller.

Mine is around 6 or 6.5. I've adjusted between the two while driving.

6.5 here on my f150. Trailer weighs in just under 7,000lbs loaded out. I did upgrade the truck brakes to some power stop Z36 pads with drilled/slotted rotors all the way around. Truck can stop on a dime if you really need to with those pads/rotors!

I've got my 2012 F150 set at 6.5 gain and am pulling a 9500lb Rezerve. I did upgrade to the power stop brakes for towing and hauling on the truck. No problems with braking.

With our 2103 CR STR 32 RL, I set the gain at 5.5 and had no issues stopping with my trailer in tow.

Mine feels good at 7.5. That number may change when I pack the bearings and check/adjust the brakes.

What's gain

I don't know what gain is. It sounds from the conversation like what the brake controller is set on in the truck. However, if that's right, then mine is way low. I have a 10,000 lbs 5th wheel and a 2003 dodge ram diesel and mine is set for 3.5 to 4.5. I use 4.5 going down the mountain.

There is no "set " number that you should set the control at. Each truck - trailer combo. is different. There are a lot of variables involved such as condition of the brakes on the trailer and the truck - weight of the trailer - condition of the plug between the truck and trailer even the voltage the trucks voltage regulator is putting out. I try to set mine where the trailer brakes lock up then dial it back a little. This has worked for me.

Happy Camping!

Actually, I have a 2010, 32' Cruiser Patriot, and my gain is also set at 4.5. Any lower, and the truck has to stop the trailer, any higher, and the breaks on the trailer lock up, especially in City driving at stop signs.

Yes gain is what the brake controller is set at. To set correctly it’s recommended to start off on level ground, get up to around 20 MPH then manually press the hand brake button on the brake controller; but don’t use your vehicle foot brake. Your supposed to be able to quickly stop your trailer without making the brakes lock up.

How many miles did you have on the truck when you made the Z36 swap? Did you ever just consider doing just the front? I see them available all over, where did you get yours? Price decent? I was looking at those yesterday but I really don't plan on keeping my truck too much longer.

Thanks in advance.

Oh and to the OP I have my gain set at 5 and about 15k miles towing.
