Weight distribution hitch selection

I have a 26ft. Zinger rear living. I have worn out the trunion bars and head. I have no idea what weight bars I have. What is the selection process?

I read your post yesterday and was giving others a chance to answer as I’m not clear on what your asking. But if you need advise on a brand or way of knowing what size bars you need, I’ll give it a try. There are many hitch brands out there. They range from a couple hundred dollars to a couple thousand.

You need to know your GVW (gross vehicle weight) for your trailer, and your hitch weight. Once you decide on your brand you want, then that brand will usually have different size bars, and sometimes shanks, for that weight of a trailer.

I would suggest looking for a WDH that has a built in sway control. I recently purchased a Blue Ox and love it. Moderate price, easy set up, and performs very well. If you go up in size for a trailer, the bars are available to upgrade also, saving money rather than purchasing another complete assembly.

Every brand will tote their advantages. Spend what you can afford, but a few extra bucks makes the pull much better. It can also make a difference between a white knuckle experience vs a comfortable drive. Hope that helps.

Yes indeedee Steve. I couldn't agree more.

I have an 'Eaz-Lift' hitch I bought online which with delivery cost right around $200.

The specs rate it for a 10,000lb pull with an 800lb tongue weight.

My TT is within that and it makes driving interstates at 60 - 65 mph with 18 wheelers passing in normal wind conditions a breeze. In heavy crosswinds it can still be a handful, but what wouldn't, and no dollar amount spent on a WDH will cure that.

Merry Christmas.

I had a Reese WDH on with my previous travel trailer. We are picking up are new to us but used Sunset Trail 32BH on Saturday and I decided to go with the Andersen WDH this time. I will let you know how it tows. From what I have read it works really well.

You ever form an opinion on the Anderson vs the Reese? I need to move up in load capacity and am debating the Reese vs Equalizer vs Anderson.

I have an Equalizer. Love it.

We previously had a Eaz-Lift round bar with the separate sway bar. I think the Equalizer does a much better job (on a much larger trailer, too).

Everyone preaches the ProPride or Andersen, but I'm not one to invest such a high amount into a hitch. The Equalizer works great and is a much more reasonable price.

Doesn't really matter the hitch - proper loading and setup coupled with careful driving is the real key to a smooth ride.

Propride solved towing issues with wind and heavy truck turbulence on expressway/ freeway. Cost is high, but worth the safety, comfort and easy towing. Drove from Canada to Sarasota with 1/2 ton Ram. No issues and avoided trading to lighter trailer. 2013 Sunset Trail Reserve 36 foot model at threshold of max. weight for gas engine, crew cab. Very pleased with performance and weight distribution.
