What Brand Tires to purchase for aluminum rims

We have a Sunset Trail Reserve 25rb weights 6050 pounds without anything in it. They have put new axles on it this week and we need to replace the tires on aluminum rims the tires we have now are ST225/75R15 D with a psi rating of 50 pounds. All tires we are looking at now have a PSI of 65 pounds can our rims handle that psi difference.

It should be stamped on the inside of your rims. Otherwise ask who ever you got the rims from.

It still should be stamped on the inside (opposite the valve stem) what the PSI rating is.
Most are stamped on the outside where you can read it. I have seen some where they stamped it on the inside and the tire has to come off the rim to read it.

We will have to go over there on Weds and see if we can read the psi from the rim. So confusing when the manufacturer does not know what psi our rims will take. If I had not read on line about the aluminum rims not able to take a higher tire pressure we would of bought an E tire instead of a D.

Your original tires should be st20575-15 c-rated at 50 psi with 5 studs. (mine are) The 225's are to wide for the 205 rims. And require a 6 stud pattern.
When you got new axles, did they re use your 8" brakes?

No I wrote down what the tires were and they were st225/75 r15 45 psi right off the tire. I believe they are replacing brakes we are going over there tomorrow to check things out
I did not write down the D but it seemed to me it was because we were looking into upgrading to an E tire, but they are 80 psi. and we were told the aluminum rims cannot hold that weight. I wrote to crossroads so will let you know what they say.

For our trailer ,it came with c rate 205's. the 2014 26' and up had 225's. 25rb was discontinued. look to see if it is 5 or 6 stud. 225's won't fit right on 5 stud rjms as the rims for 225's are wider. there is no way you need e rated tires.
Do not know were you saw 45 psi , usually the st tires say 50 psi...
I just got new axles, springs and tires last summer, so kinda remember the #'s...at least I think.

When they replace the axles do they repack the bearings and grease fittings. I am anxious to see what size tires are on the trailer now. I was sure we wrote the numbers down correctly. It was one of the last trailers with the two year warranty which ran out Feb 7, so we were lucky we noticed the wear on the tires while winterizing it. I will write it all out again tomorrow. Thanks Chris

They will probably re use your 8" brakes and will have to put new seals and repack bearings as it is only the axle being replaced . When they use 8" brakes with a 5200 # axle ,that makes it a 4400# axle. like the newer ones. If they keep 8" brakes then they will have to use 5 stud rims ,so the new tires will be c rated. You can get d rated in 205's. I have them on my boat trailer.

Went by to see trailer, new axles are on and we have one new set of brakes etc as one axle was sent complete from the factory with everything on it and the other was from Lippert so they had to assemble it. You were right we misread the tires they are 205's did you go from a C to a D in your new tires. We are looking at the Freestar at our local firestone dealer. Not sure the aluminum rims can hold the extra tire pressure of 65 psi. and it says in the manual to use the same tires but since we upgraded the axles not sure about this.

i stayed with c rated ,so far. The alum should be ok as the 2015's have 225-d rated on them, and on alum.

Crossroads is checking with the company that supplied the rims and letting me know.

Higher rated tires are only an advantage IF your loaded trailer weight is close to the max capacity of the original tires. If you look at any load inflation chart, a C rated tire and a D rated tire will have the same carrying capacity at the same PSI. But the D rated tire will run slightly hotter at that same PSI due to the extra mass of the tire and therefore have reduced reliability. Some brands like Carlisle state that you must run their tires at max PSI, but even before that, Carlisle states only buy the right tire for the trailer and don't tow at speeds above 60 mph even though the speed rating is 65 mph.

If instead you inflate the D rated tires to their full PSI, yet the actual weight is much lower than the capacity, then the tires will be too stiff for actual weight and the trailer and it's contents will ride much harsher with potential long term reliability issues for the unit and appliances.

My Cruiser came with E rated tires with a load capacity around 3400 lbs per tire. Even today, my loaded weight per tire is only 2300 lbs, which is well matched to the 5200 lb axles. But I switched to LT tires with a 3000 lb capacity and run them at an appropriate PSI for the actual load.

We called Crossroads and they checked with the rim dealer and we were told we could go to the d rated tire. The new axles are 4400s and our trailer weighs about 6020 unloaded, not sure if the new axles add some weight or not, they are only 1/2 inch more in diameter. We thought if the axles bent because of the load being too heavy for them that since the axles are heavier duty maybe we should upgrade tires also. We usually drive at about 55 on the expressway 60 max. Looking at Freestar st205/75 D and crossroads said to run them at 65 psi. We will have to ask the tire dealer on monday.

You are going from an 1820 lb tire to a 2150 lb tire and very appropriate for a 4400 lb axle. The old axles were probably 3500 lb rated and the 1820 lb tire was the right tire for them. Without knowing actual loaded weight on the axles it is impossible to determine how much extra capacity you have with 65 psi, but seems like it will be a reasonable number rather than excessive.

Larry : I have the same trailer as op. weight on axles loaded last yr was 6820 lbs. divide that by 4 =1700 per tire. subtract that from 1820 for the c rated = 120.lbs . Cutting it kinda close for a buffer of 10 %. think I will be switching to d rated to give me the safety .

Yea, that is not much margin. At least you probably aren't towing in very hot temps or over 60 mph, which both reduce capacity below the max. Keep your axle GAWRs in mind as well.

Mine were upgraded to the 4400# also , with matching springs too. Just the tires that are borderline . I did put 10000 miles (16000 km) on in the 1st year before axle, spring and tire replacement.
