Wheel Bearings ( Truck not trailer )

I'm chasing a mystery and I wondered if anyone on this forum could help. Since March of 2012 I have replaced my drivers side wheel bearing twice and the passenger side 4 times. Each time at the dealer using OEM parts.

I'm at a loss to why my Avalanche would keep going through wheel bearings. Each time the full hub assembly is replaced, the alignment is in spec everything checks out fine.

This morning my drivers side wheel nearly separated I dropped the kids off at school left the parking lot and the low hum which I thought were the tires instantly turned into grinding, banging, clunking metal.

Ideas anyone?

I am at a loss as to why, but I have had to replace mine twice on my 03 Silverado. Drivers side went out about 50,000 miles. Another 20 or so and passenger side went out. About 120,000 drivers went out again and replaced both at same time. Pushing 160,000 now so I keep an eye and ear on them.

Is this your tow vehicle? Are you overloading the axles? Have you weighed your setup to be sure? Other than that I do not know.

There is a lot in the front suspension that can go wrong. The Z angle on the torsion bars could be off, Ball joints could be bad causing excess wobble, plus your inner tie rods have a dampner on them that goes bad. Some or all of this could be the cause of your wheel bearings going bad quickly. When I replaced both of my wheel hub assemblys I found that all of the above was bad or worn on my truck. Once all that is replaced and or fixed, get an alligment to prevent extra strain. My truck handles nicely now.

These are on the front. There is no such thing as a packing wheel bearings anymore. This is a sealed unit that simply bolts on. They have been this way for years on GM products. Can't speak to ford and dodge.

Doesn't Dodge still have a solid axle? I have had a few ifs chevy's without any problems with the front wheel bearings.

Ok, no answer on that. My old '96 GMC still has the original fronts, packed once by me. But then again it's barely broke in at 167k.

Its a close race between Dodge and Ford for the replacement. After todays trouble I've just about had it with GM.

The saga continues. The recently replaced right side was out of spec and replaced under warranty. The left side was out of spec but not replaced as the tech though the noise wasn't too bad and could be from the tires. Because I noticed the noise after the last oil change and tire rotation I had them rotate the tires to see if the noise would move or go away. I was worried about front differential failure but they said it was fine and the fluid was full and clean.

I got the truck back and the noise major noise is gone but there is still a significant groaning as you get over 25MPH. I picked the truck up just before service closed so nobody could talk to me, so tomorrow morning I'm going back to drop it off for the left side to be replaced. I'm not happy at all the fact that they would waste another day of my week to have them do something that would be covered under a warranty.

To answer the loading questions, I'm still under combined max gross at the local cat scales and with my equalizer hooked up I'm within 72lbs on my front. It's still low but it's as close as I could get with my autoride system on the rear adjusting its self.

They had no explanation for the repeated failures.

Thats correct it's been the front each time.

I am still on the original rear wheel bearings. I did have to have the rear axle worked on as the seals went out. They told me my rear wheel bearings were still good. This problem with GM front bearing assemblies has nothing to do with towing or weight. You can get better quality than the OEM part however. I would try that next time it happens. Unless you can get dealer to do it under warranty.

They offer a Timken option which was less expensive than the OEM at cost but they offer no warranty on the product. Because of this I have always gone with the OEM.

I just need to get the truck though the summer and then it's off to someone else, where I'm sure they will use it for years without any issues.

You should be good for another 50-60,000 after they are replaced.

I am an auto mechanic in Michigan . we use Timken bearings as aftermarket parts. We have had very good luck with them. Our parts store does warranty defective ones for about 2 years or so. They do have a torque spec on the axle shaft but. Make sure that is done properly. Ford's are job security for our shop as well.

Question? Just how many OEM bearing are you going to buy before you figure out they are no good?

I upgraded last time mine were done. They have about 35-40,000 on them now. Right at 160,000 total on truck. I am going to drive it till the wheels fall off. Hopefully a new TV will be in the budget by then.
