Wind Deflector

I'm pulling a 20ft TT with a 2012 Ram 1500 w/ the Hemi. I get approx 8.5 mph. Sometimes a little better and often a little worse. The grade of gas doesn't seem to make much difference.

Does anyone have experience with an Aero Shield wind deflector. Their web page suggests up to 3mph improvement. That seems almost to good to be true but a 1mph improvement could offset a lot of the cost of pulling the TT this year.

From another Rv forum website.

Quote:
OSP1268: For what it is worth. About 3 or 4 years ago there was a test on those on TV (Myth Busters) and the out come was not very good. It didn't increase the gas mileage significantly, but it did help keep bugs off the front of the 5th wheel. It seems they work better on a semi-tractor trailer outfit because the deflector is closer to the trailer. I was thinking about getting one when we had our 5th wheel and after watching the Myth Busters show decided against it.
You may get some ideas from some of the others on the site here as over the past couple of years they may have possibly improved the design.

Seems like I remember Dayle1 posting about this awhile back. I believe he had one mounted on one of his trucks. I don't think he gave it much credit other then keeping some of the bugs off the front of his camper.

If there is truth to it's effectiveness, it wouldn't take long to pay for itself. lets say 8.5 mpg compared to 11.5 mpg with $6.00CAD for imperial gallon like here in Canada. 2300 mile trip with 11.5mpg=200 gal=$1200CAD compared to 8.5mpg=276 gal=$1656CAD a difference of $456 CAD. Yep, almost sounds to good to be true using Canadian numbers anyways, lol.

Wow! Gas is expensive up there. That's equivalent to $3.79 per gallon here. Gasoline is $2.45/gal in central VA. Diesel is $2.65/gal and premium gasoline is $2.68/ gal.

Diesel has been slowly creeping up to the price of premium gasoline here. Soon, it will cost me as much to drive my Silverado as it does to drive my Chevy SS.

The cheapest gas in Ca I can find is $3.25 for 87 octane unleaded, and $3.45 diesel. Of course the new tax our wonderful governor added on didn’t help!

Your american gal =3.78Liters. Gas PER LITRE in Vancouver BC=$1.52CAD per litre, gas in Toronto Ontario is $1.28CAD per litre, and in Yorkton Saskatchewan is $1.18CAD per litre. so $1.17CAD x 3.78litre (USA gal) =$4.42CAD = $3.51USD. per an American gallon per the price here in Yorkton providing you can find a bank to exchange Canadian money to American money for nothing, which they like a 5%CAD service fee for their help, lol.

I get 8.5 to 11.5 towing my nearly 40' 5er & they would have to positively money back guarntee 10 mpg before I'd mount one of those ugly things on my truck.
I would venture a guess that 8.5 mpg is about average mileage for any rv, be it towables or driveable, regardless of make of vehicle or type/size of the engine.

I believe you are right, just was hoping to cut expenses a little. Will have to look somewhere else.

Our truck and 5th wheel gross 17490 loaded. We get between 6 and 9 mpg. Average is in the upper 7s -7.6 -7.9. I try to stay off the interstates and run about 55 on the 2 lane backroads. I use my cruise and run in 4th gear in the hills to avoid a lot of shifting. I use 5th on the flats. The old girl is not happy in 6th while loaded. Empty I average in the 15s.

Please say that's a typo!!
You're towing a nearly 17.5k 5er with a 3/4 ton gasser??
WOW!!
That's 1 ton dually diesel required only, in my opinion!!!

No typo. The combined weight Truck and trailer is 17. The truck has a GCW of 18000.

It doesn't say much for the Aero Shield company that their ad in Trailer Life magaizine features in larger bold letters "KEEPS BUGS OFF" then in smaller letters & "tow with ease".

Looks like even they know it's just an oversized bug shield.
