We are looking at purchasing a new 2010 Sunset Trail ST29RL. We have a new 2009 Cheve 1500 Crew cabequiped with the 5.3 trailering package & HD trans cooler. Will we have any problem pulling this unit with our truck? The truck is rated at 9600 grw the trailer we are looking at dry weight is 6200lbs. Weare pullinga 27'HI LO which is light and low. Do I need to do anything to my truck?

Yeh, trade it for a Ford.Just kidding, I think you should be fine as long as you have the proper brake controller and especially sway bars or leveling bars for your hitch. You'll be close to your weight rating of your truck with fuel, passengers and cargo. It looks like a nice floor plan.

Thanks for your suggestion on the Ford however I just can't do that. Regarding the tow equipment, brake control, sway bar, leveling barsI do have all of that. I also added the RAM aircleaner & exteneded trotle body which increase tork & HP. It's only the wife & I plus2 small dogs. I might have to go on a diet to reduce the load. We are going in Monday to Camper World in NB TX to close the deal.

Congrats on the new rig, you should be fine with your tow truck, but be prepared for lower mileage and higher revs on the hills...would like to see pics if you have em...keep us informed...

Check into a set of Bilstein shock absorbers. They do a lot for controlling the truck. Not that expensive, lifetime warranty. Autozone carries them, as does other vendors. If you still have the oem shocks on that truck it would be like night and day. The oem shocks that came on our 2500HD were not even within 30% as good as the Bilsteins are. With your truck, you would not need the 5100 series Bilsteins, the plain yellow heavy duty ones would be fine.

I am a firm believer in setting the suspension up on the tow vehicle to be as best as it could be. Back when I was in high school, and shortly there after (I graduated in 75) everyone was into jacking their car up but I was into handling. I learned how to make cars handle and drive in more than a straight line and that carried over into my present day trucks.

Besides putting Bilsteins on our truck, I swapped out the oem front sway bar for a heavy duty Hellwig one and added a rear sway bar also from Hellwig. Lets say my truck will handle almost as good as a car does, actually better than most.

I have found that not having to fight the truck makes it less tiresome to drive and I actually pulled our old 28 footer thru one of the hurricanes that made it all the way up here to Ohio a few years back. Having all the equipment on the truck, plus the sway control between the truck and trailer and a load leveler helped get through that mess with no issues.

I pulled a 29 foot Sprinter TT that had a dry weight of 6800 with a 5.3 GMC. I had gone from a 4800 pound Dutchman lite to the Sprinter. Only thing I did was have the dealer change out the 3.55 rearend for a 3.73. Truck then pulled the Sprinter better than it did the Dutchman. Since truck was 2wd, it only cost about $850.00 for the change out. Something you might want to look at if you have any concerns and have a 3.42 or 3.55 rearend.

I pull my ST29RL with an '02 Suburban. No problems. Been through mts, etc. Just make sure you have good equalizer/swaybars and set up hitch height right.
