Neil, you are correct, it's pex pipe that comes off the fittings. I wasn't remembering it correctly. The filler pipe is what has the hose with the hose clamp on it. That was what was leaking on mine,...

Mine has a nipple/elbow (which screws into the tank) on the openings. Then it's usually a good old hose clamp holding the hose onto it.
