We are 6 month [half timers] so I would not recommend the unit I mentioned. It works well for us but for a traveler, there are smaller units more suitable. I regenerate mine every couple weeks or so...

There is a smaller model available also.
The softner will help prevent buildup though out the whole plumbing system...
