2022 Zinger 18RK, Springs

Just took my Zinger in to have a tech check my springs. The trailer is only 2 yrs old, never been overloaded and the springs are flat! The tech said I have a 4000 lb axle with 2500 lb springs! He is going to investigate to see what's up. Anyone else have this problem?

Just a clarification -- By 2500# springs do you mean 2500 # each side or 1250
# springs each side 2500# total?

I believe each side. Not for sure. This is a certified tech that I took this too.

I believe Crossroads built it within the range of specs they have for it.

They have never been known for giving anything extra on the springs and/or axle weights.

  • Dry Weight: 3527 lbs.
  • Carrying Capacity: 943 lbs.
  • Hitch Weight: 476 lbs

Good to know. Not good that they have already gone flat.

You might have to put the next heavier springs on it. Also have your tech check to see if the tires are wearing evenly. If their not, check the axle to see if that is bent. If it's bent, then it will require a new , probably heavy axle. Hate to be a bearer of bad tidings, but the way it sounds to me, that is all something that will have to be considered.

You are right. And I am definitely looking at upgrading the springs.

I looked at the spec for that trailer and it should have the 4000 lb axel but nothing about the springs. If they were 2500 each they should have been enough to fit the need but they may be just crappy springs.

IMO The max weight for the trailer (trailer+everything you put in it) should be around 4700 lbs. The weight on the axel will be this weight minus the hitch weight so you should still be good. This what the manufacturer supplies and they don't beef it up for you, the customer, to gige you added safety.

If you have a bent axel, go with a size larger and a little better spring. Don't over do it and make it too stiff that it doesn't flex as that could cause further damage to the trailer interior.

If anything you will have to replace your springs and a trailer shop should be able to get that done.

Found out the springs on the trailer are rated 1750 each side. Hmmmm 3500 doesn't add up to a 4000 lb axle. I think another Covid short cut.

Did you contact the dealer and see if they would make it right with you?

I plan on contacting them. The clincher is getting Crossroads to approve the upgrade. They have not been very cooperative on other issues.

If the springs are not what is suppose to be in there, then whats the problem?
The factory screwed up! They ought to be honest enough to just step up and take care of it without any argument!

Well, Norcold told me my frig should run on propane when I am traveling. It blows out everytime. The dealership contacted them and they said it is not covered under warranty. It was installed incorrectly. Crossroads were the ones that installed it and won't cover it.

I had A Hitchhiker that the flame for the fridge blew out when we were traveling. It must be something with how the air travels/circulates around the rig when it's moving.
Anyway, I solved the problem by putting a strip of duck tape over one set of louvers on the fridge door. (on the inside of the door) I would remove it when we were setup.

Interesting. I hadn't heard that fix before. On the interior cabin, frig door or the inside of the outdoor hatch cover for frig?

The door on the outside of the trailer. Where you would access the back side of the fridge. In other words, where the flame is for the fridge

One more question. I just looked and I have 3 louvers. Which one did you cover? Top, bottom, or middle?
