Another update
Thought I'd give another update on our granddaughter's progress as she has been in rehab for 4-1/2 months now. She is walking some with the aid of a walker. With limited help, she can move from bed to chair, etc. and she can partially dress herself. Last week she learned how to transfer in and out of a car, so she can now travel w/o needing a wheelchair equipped van. The staff gave us training today and we were able to take Bernell out to lunch.
Bernell has spoken at several local churches for a few minutes. While she still knows how to use her iPhone and most of the aspects of being a teenager, she is presently very child-like. She will say whatever is on her mind, she wants what she wants, etc. So, there are times she is in great spirits and other times she is an insistent child. We had a family cookout this weekend and Bernell offered to say grace and she did a great job.
She still has very limited use of her left hand, but the therapist is using a mirror technique to trick her brain to move it like the right hand. Unfortunately she is still missing a section of her skull. Some weeks ago she had a major infection on the brain and they put her on an antibiotic IV treatment and removed the plastic shield between the brain and skin. Hopefully the skull will finally be replaced in the next few weeks, then her recovery should really speed up.
One other problem, Bernell will now eat anything and her brain doesn't tell her when to stop eating. So she has gained 70+ lbs. Something else we are praying will change when the skull is replaced. And this week she moves to another rehab facility for the next phase of her recovery.
