The tanks are stamped and I bet the contact is not good between the two. In the hvac world I know they have a heat transfer paste used for thermostat connections in ac units.

Mine does the same. Water out of the relief and the unit is still heating. Have not looked into it yet. Is there any heat sink compound or a bonding agent at the thermostat to tank connection?
