Dumb Question - Hot Water Heater

Okay - newbie question. So my water heater will run off gas or electric. That's cool. Here's what I don't know. Is the "UP" position on, or is the "DOWN" position on with respect to the switch. The owners manual, believe it or not, doesn't say.

Thanks for not making fun of me.

The light doesn't come on when it's on?

If switch seems backwards, it may be upside down. Our switch lights for both electric or gas. You can also run both simultaneously for fast turn around. Yours should be EXACTLY the same!

Who said we wouldn't make fun of you? Just kidding. If you are talking about the panel switch, on mine you push it up. You did not say which model TT you have. If you have an electric fireplace option there is a second switch labeled hot water and fireplace. Hot water must be selected first as you cannot run electric fireplace and electric water heater at same time. Be sure you have water in it when you do.

That panel is different then mine, but I would guess that up is on, that is how all my switches are on my panel.

Now my light only comes on if the pilot goes out, indicating a problem.

If all is well, the light stays off. Mines an Atwood just like his picture above.

Sounds different from your's?

You can also pull the panel and make sure you have a good connection. Mine worked on gas but not electric till I checked this.

Yes, mine looks like this and each switch lights up to indicate when on.

Thanks guys. Will take a look. Make/model of TT are in signature line. Light does come on, but I suspect that's because the pilot is not lit.

Let me head home and have a looksee. I'll get back to you tomorrow. Thanks for all of your support.

As always, you guys are awesome.

Tim:

Which position is the "on" position? Top of the toggle in or bottom of the toggle in?

Thanks!

Here's the deal. The older panels have a switch for electric and another for gas with a red light in-between. The light only comes on if the pilot fails to light 3 times or if there is an issue with the electric side. The newer units have lighted switches.
The toggle is pushed in at the top to be "on".

I have a voltmeter plugged in to an outlet and watch for the voltage dip when I turn on the electric water heater.

Ours is a 32QB, but newer...switches light up. There is a "check" light that comes on if no flame after 3 tries.

Voltmeter is best way to know for sure. There may also be a fuse on the water heater control board (got mine wet once and it blew). If blown, neither function will work.

Is it not the same as every other switch on the panel?
