I'm not sure if we have something funny going on with our TV or not. It's a 2003 F250 and we pull our 30SK. Going through the mountains on a long steep downgrade, as my brakes heat up the truck begins to shake. The hotter they get the grater they shake until it's almost out of control.
I generally go lightly on the brakes and downshift to help reduce the load but sometime ya just got to apply the brakes especially on a long steep grade.
My question is, "is this normal or do I have a problem with a rotor"?

Sounds like your rotors are warped. Had to change the ones on my wife's truck out because of the same condition. If the rotors are warped which it sounds like it is not going to get any better.

I have the same issue and in my case it is coming from the trailer. I know they get hot and the "throbbing" goes away after a few miles of level towing. The truck doesn't do it when solo.

Good point Stan, if you get your truck brakes hot not towing and it does not pulse when the brakes are applied then look to the trailer.

I the rotor is warped why wouldn't it have a wobble when the trailer isn't on? It seems like once they are warped they'd stay that way.

Metal moves like crazy though heat cycles. Cast iron is more stable BUT as the oem's try to save money and keep prices down/profits up they use cheaper quality componets.
Is the steering wheel shaking or the whole truck?
Also try setting the trailer brakes a little more agresivly to PULL the truck out of the wobble. I pulled a improperly loaded 6 place snowmo trailer with a 80's Blazer and every down hill I neeeded to accellerate to stay in control or it would see-saw the truck/trailer like crazy

The steering wheel and truck was shaking. I never felt like the trailer was pushing me out of control. It all seemed to be in the brakes. I have to say on a couple of very long grades the shaking got pretty violent!

Still sounds like rotor warp. I can only assume you have enough trailer brakes set but on those long down hills you might need a little more.

Did you let the TV set for a long time where the brake rotors could have rusted in one spot? (under the brake pads) We had that happen to ours. While just driving down the road the pitted / rusty section of the rotor would grab as it past the brake pad. When the brakes were applied it was a thousand times worse. I pulled the wheels and attempted to remove the rust from the damaged part of the rotor. That was a total waste of time; the pits in the rotor were more of the problem than the rust. I bought new rotors and installed them. (That is what I should have done the first time that I pulled off the wheels!) The problem disappeared.
Hope it is an easy fix for you.

Kamper Dave, you may be onto something there. My 2003 truck only has 20,000 miles on it and 9,000 of the was put on last summer. Other than that it has sat most of the time with the emergency brake on. Add to that I live on an island one block from salt water.
Now the question is, how do I check for this condition? I've driven the truck enough that the rotors are polished silver with no real evidence of rust. There is some small pitting but nothing reallynoticeablein one particular spot.

Was reading a tire review were the author mention that Ford can get " the dreaded death wobble" they said the drag link was bad. Might need to look at the steering componants but with only 20grand on the odometer you wouldn't think it would be bad.
Just one more thing to check out.

I have an '06 F250 4x4 that on occasion would almost shake me out of the truck. Had the front checked and had it aligned. Neither shop found anything other than the right front tirehad a big flat spot. Had the tires rotated and could feel vibration from the back. Replaced all the tires, they were due anyway, and the problem seems to be gone. If this is a rotor problem is be there driving unloaded also. Edited by: 4huskers

This happened to my c-class ford .. It was terrible. Once the brakes got hot, the games began. The pads would glaze over and were probably red hot. Setting the trailer brakes higher a little, as stated earlier, helps also.
I bought drilled and slotted rotors . The drilled and slotted helped dissipate the heat and keeps the pads from glazing over. Once they are glazed over, Then more heat, vicious cycle
Once the rotors and pads are gone on my f250, Drilled and slotted are going on there also.
Got the same rotors on my Jeep,Focus and my previous corolla..
