Water Heater Gas and Electric

Can you use gas and electric at the same time?
What heats up quicker gas or electric?

Obviously when I have full hook up I rather use their electric instead of my gas.
It's cold this weekend for Florida standards and my women don't want to walk to the showers. It is somewhat of a hike. All Yankees please refrain from mocking us Floridian's.
I'm just curious if you could use both and would the recovery time be quicker.

Yes, you can use both at the same time. The recovery will be a lot faster.

Have you considered long johns for the long cold trip to the shower?

x3. I always run mine on both during periods of high demand. Recovery is much quicker and have never run out of hot water. I turn gas off when away or don't need hot water.

We are in Florida right now and it is pretty chilly. It was in the low forties inside our trailer this morning when I got up (we don't run the furnace overnight). I run the furnace for a bit in the morning to warm the place up. I am running the hot water on gas right now because the fireplace is also on!

Thank you everyone. I ran them both last night just while we were showering and it worked great. I shut the water heater off at night because that red light drives me nuts. And I only have it in when we need it. I'm too chicken to leave things on when we are gone. I even shut off the water when we go on our day trips.

LOL. I do the same thing. Those red lights bug me at night too. I turn on the electric when I get up. When we leave for the day, the water heater is off, close the awning, and shut off water.

When we leave to do some sight-seeing I also shut off the water to the camper...We had a neighbor at a campground a couple of years ago that left the water on to their camper and when they got back from a day away from the camper it was flooded...One of the kids either left some water running in the camper or they had a leak not sure which, but everything inside their 5er was soaked... After that I have always shut off the water, when we leave...

With our first TT we went for a hike and came back to a waterfall coming out of the back of our TT. A hose line to the water heater popped off and flooded everything.

Exactly why I turn mine off if going away for the day.

But Lloyd, no one stocks long johns in Florida. Or in south Texas. Not true, I use them fairly often. But then they are a hassle to take back off 5 min. later when it warms up down here.

We follow Tim's practice - use electric to maintain thru day/night, turn gas on with it in morning during shower time.

We turn the electric off after dinner dishes are done, turn it on again in the morning to shower and then turn if off after showers. The water stays hot all day long, but it is in the high 70's so I imagine that might not work for people somewhere colder. I have never turned the water off when leaving for a day but after reading these posts I think it may be a good practice to start doing. Thanks again, always learn something new here.

Travel well, travel safe,
Jim

Jim
Why do you turn the electric side of your hot water heater off during the day is it just to save the ware on the water heater.

We'll turn on the gas during shower times when we need the water to recover faster. Other than that the electric is on all the time we are at camp.

Fleece pants are pretty warm and we had a cool crappy summer in NW PA. I do not break out long johns until I am out hunting all day in 20's or lower!
