Aluminum Fords

Anybody checked into one? I was wondering if they are going to make them available in the extended cab this year.

Check it out very thoroughly. ALL F150 will be aluminum bodies. Similar to the aluminum that is used in Humvee s. Wait till you see the towing stats.

That sounds about right. The beefed up towing package on the 11-14s is around 11000. If they dropped 700lbs (no fat jokes folks) thats where they found the extra towing and payload.

This is huge for potential 5ver owners out there.

It would be cool if more and more vehicles moved towards aluminum. however, there is not a lot of expertise out there to fix aluminum vehicles in the event of a crash.

My thoughts are once the insurance industry starts to get a handle, called "experience" for their tables, that initially rates could start to climb as they realize how expensive they will be to fix

on top of that, there will not be a large pool of used parts to pull from so everyone will be getting the new oem parts guarantee

the upside, you won't be fighting rust so bad. sure aluminum corrodes but not as fast as steel rusts, especially here in Ohio. it is a constant and ongoing battle to keep my 2004.5 2500HD free from rust.

x2,

my body shop guy told me the initial rates would go up substantially. He's seeing it now with the German cars, and no its not all because they're imports.

Its the chance I willing to take here in Ohio.

Ford recently announced their Superduty line up will be aluminum. GM has also announced it's next gen Silverado/Sierra will be aluminum bodies as well.

If what I have heard is correct, there won't be any fixing. It will be all replacement of parts.
