Wifi Boost

Have a 2014 Elevation 3612. Can anybody tell what the wifi boost is/does (besides the obvious boosts your wifi)? Or is it perhaps, just that simple?
Thanks, Robert

Although I don't have one, it is called wifi ranger. My understanding is that it makes a connection to a wifi network and then rebroadcasts the signal with different ssid inside the rv. It is basically a wifi access point but it has an antenna outside for better range.

Most RV parks have terrible WiFi but won't admit it. I would sure like to find a good WiFi booster.
Anyone have a suggestion?

The problem is when you amplify a poor signal, you get a louder poor signal. Range extenders are designed to extend wifi range by putting the device closer to the source than where you want to extend range. When you are in the rv, you can't get the extender closer to source and make a poor signal louder. Like in the old days with an analog fm tuner. When you have a weak signal, it simply becomes a loud bad signal when you turn up the volume.

Has anybody tried the Wilson Electronics stuff? Supposed to boost cell phone range as well as data. Or is it the same issue, makes a weak signal just a louder weak signal? However, sometimes when you are in the middle of nowhere, a loud weak signal may just work.....I'm just saying. Robert

They do just what they claim. It's a fine product.

2wheelglider is right,

amplifying a signal with an RV park that has lousy throughput won't help. Most of the issues I've had at various parks is the throughput and/or bandwith the park makes available, not the actual signal.

Some wireless providers also have built in QOS or qualty of service. That means if you are streaming a movie in your rig, the service provider can see than and bump you so that 100 other people can download their email attachments.

WiFi is a digital signal and it's like digital TV, it either works or it doesn't. If you don't have enough signal strength in your trailer to work reliably the booster with an outside antenna will work to raise the signal level. It however cannot correct for low throughput which a lot of parks have.

Long story short if the signal is strong but the download speed is terrible the booster won't help. If the signal is weak the booster can help get it to an acceptable level.

Have you tried a directional antenna?

We finally purchased a stationary directional antenna via Amazon that feeds into our Verizon jetpack and we pointed it to the nearby Verizon transmitter. We had fantastic Wi-Fi until Verizon boosted the cell signal and now folks are using their cell phones as hot spots and choking the system. I now surf somewhere between the hours of 10:00 PM thru 9:00 AM.

Hey Jerry - On my 3912 it is on the roof. Little grey box sealed on the roof.
