HW heater burned the side of trailer
Started the hw heater on propane, like I always do. About 15 minutes later smelled burning plastic. Lucky I had the screen door open. Found black smoke belching out of the heater exhaust outlet and a dark yellow flame. Looks like a gas pressure problem. Obviously I shut it down right away. Cant clean the stuff off of the siding. I'm pi**ed to say the least. The thing I dread is dealing with CW. I wish Crossroads would let me get someone else to do this warranty work.

Sounds like an Atwood issue, find an authorized Atwood dealer to do the work.

Well, I still have the black siding to deal with too.
Fridge and stove work fine, so I believe it to be a burner issue on the heater. Flue is not blocked.

Found that a spider has started to move into the air tube for the burner, starving the burner of air. Cleaned the air tube an it is now running fine. Cleaned siding with black streak remover. Looks ok.
Thanks

MarkandKim, Mr Clean Magic Eraser works great on black streaks and stubborn bugs.

I've had this happen on our new trailer. Bought this little baby and stick in in the flame tube as part of my setup regiment before turning on the water heater.

I used WD-40 to clean some black stains off the trailer and it worked great.

I did last year, hence the post. Luckily I was standing there pulling stuff out of the from storage when it kicked on. Could have been a bad scene if I didn't shut if off quickly.

I'm actually designing a deflector hood to put over the heater when parked. I have learned over time to also shut water and gas heaters off when leaving the trailer for any extended period of time. I will shut off the hot water heater overnight while camping too.
Anyone have this kind of trouble with their furnace before?

After witnessing the flame-up we had, I'd be interested how you'd make that work. It's the heat rather than the soot that appears to be the issue. Just cleaning out the exhaust chamber before lighting the heater seams to do the trick. The flame we had was coming out of the vent on the cover.
Just to confirm the original poster, this is the hot water heater we're talking about, right?

Mud Dabbers love the outlets out side also. There are after market screens you cam purchase to keep them out. Never had the problem with the furnace tho, but any thing is possible

Ah, I could see where that if the furnace did the same thing, there would be considerable damage..at least on the water heater most of the flame/heat is concentrated around the metal door. Flames shooting out of the furnace exhaust would do a heck more damage.

My hot water heater keeps spitting water out of the pressure and temperature relief. I need to see if there is an adjustable thermostat that is turned up to high. I have a pressure reducer on the hydrant, but it only does it if the water heater is on.

There is no adjustable thermostat. Open and close it to relieve pressure at top of tank

I shut mine off when away and at night while sleeping. It only takes five minutes for me to have hot water.

Once you have it up to temp it holds for quite awhile I always shut the WH off overnite. I know my usage generally and turn it on as needed. In a pinch you can always run gas and electric for a quicker heat up

I'm always a bit uneasy when I'm laying in bed and hear that burner fire up underneath me. I only run gas when it's shower time for the family.
Rest of the time I leave it on electric.
