"I added a Reese Elite Airborne SideWinder hook-up to it, so it can be pulled with a short-bed pick-up (I've pulled it with my half-ton Chevrolet ever since I bought it new -- and it handles it fine). "

Amazing....

Um...hitch weight of 1,940, GAWR 10,400, and GVWR of 12,340...I have the brochure from looking at Open Ranges used...

Isnt the max payload on most 1/2 tons around 2K I know my F150 goes to 3K with regular cab, short bed 2WD and HD package?

Mine is probably a little to old to help. I have 2005 1500 QC hemi, 4x4. My payload is around 1300. I'm pulling a 34' camper, weighs 6300 dry. My tongue weight is close to 900 fully loaded. The only upgrade I've done is coil-over shocks. I'm probably pushing or over my payload. The truck pulls great, stops even better and rides level. Good luck with your decision.

Ohio Mark;
1940 is shipping hitch weight, add all his gear, hitch, generator, batteries. Pin weight probably right at 3k, just guessing.

What is your payload? RAWR? You have a half ton. Straight from the door post.

One of the pictures of his rig hooked up shows a crew cab 4x4, short bed.

Ok, I don't see the RAWR on the sticker. Does it go by a different set of initials for Ford possibly?

My Ford has 2 stickers, one has the VIN, tires, pressure, etc and shows Front & Rear GVWR. In my case Rear GVWR is 6693.

The second sticker shows the tires and a statement "The combined weight of the cargo and passengers should never exceed 3492 lbs. That's what mine shows.

Hunterred,
We tow our ST28BH Reserve with a 2009 Dodge Ram 1500 sport, factory tow, added brake controller and an Anderson WDH and we have not had any problems. We took the advice from some great folks in this forum and pack light. However, we camp close to home, 2-3 hours away and do not haul water in our tanks. We love this unit as we have 4 grandbabies and use the bunks for them. We do not carry toys and things only our 2 mountain bikes. Yes we were told by some here we would be taxing the Dodge but we load light and take it slower, 60-67 mph and our being able to stop everything hasn't proven to be a problem either. Hope this helps.

I have a brand new '14 Ram Outdoorsman, crew cab, 4x4, 3.92, 5.7L hemi with 10ply E- load rated tires that carries 2 adults, 2 kids, maybe a couple of bikes, maybe a couple bundles of wood. I added Air Lift 1000 airbags to the coil springs and usually have between 15-20lbs of air in them. We tow the Sunset Trail ST270BH. Truck rides level, pulls very well and stops well (our integrated brake controller works great).

The only time I have had any problems is when we took it out west and got into some windy conditions. We took it slow and arrived safely.

We have just under 1300lbs payload in our truck.

Nice setup. What's your WDH and sway control setup?

You have a nice BP setup and it works for you.

We were discussing half ton PU's and 5th wheel trailers which put a load (pin weight) directly on the rear axle and subtract from the payload. The 1300 lb payload on on your Ram would seriously limit your choice of 5th wheel trailers.

Thanks for the payload info on your truck.

Equalizer 1,000/10,000

It works pretty well, I just have to watch what I'm doing with the airbags so I don't take too much pressure off the spring bars. More friction = more sway control.

Exciding the GVWR will put unwanted stress on all components of the drive train not to mention over taxing the breaks. My advice is to stay within the GVWR limits. Be safe my friend.
