Tow Vehicle Driving Lamps:

Tow Vehicle Driving Lamps:
I really enjoy towing the Cruiser with the 3500 RAM but if and when we tow in the dark I fear colliding with the critters running across the roadway; OR having to make a sharp turn and not being able to see the roadway that we are about to travel upon.
Hence, we installed Kawell LED flood lamps and from what I can tell so far they well work just great. 48 watt6500K and 3200 LM

Dave, you will have to test them out at night with a buddy, and ask him if it affects "his" vision when meeting you.

Thanks. Yes, we will.
We plan on using these without oncoming traffic. There is plenty of that where we are headed.

THEY WORK FINE!! Big Red is now visible while on the road.

Last year by this time we had already experience 4 close calls; all were sudden stops with the RAM. All appeared to be foreign visitors.
  • 2 we almost T-Boned as they pulled out in front of us from intersections.
  • 1 pulled over into a turn out and then pulled out when next to us, forcing us into oncoming traffic.
  • 1 blew the oncoming stop sign while we were turning left.
NEW DAYTIME DRIVING LIGHTS INSTALLED and the only close call this year was when we failed to have then ON.

Dave,
I too am interested in those units. I know you called them floods but the mfg data refers to them as marine, off road, atv lighting.
Did you hook them up to your high beam switch or do you have up fitter switches to activate them?
I currently have floods that aren't very effective.
I like them, just not sure the oncoming traffic would too?

The Rams are a different animal when it comes to adding any accessory lighting. Without the aux. switches, you are better off to run a new circuit and switch completely independent of the truck's factory wiring if you are not skilled in electronics/wiring. The CANBUS wiring system on Ram is very sensitive to voltage spikes. My TV has the factory fog lights and some dealers in the US will provide the flash to activate the daytime driving lights. Canada Rams already have them activated from what I understand.

Not sure on the setup for Ford....

Wiring

I spliced into the parking light wire to power a relay. I can disable the relay by removing ground (-12dcV) via a switch in the cab.
The relay contacts power the LED lamps. So, they are fully isolated from the factory wiring.
The Dealership Tech wired his direct and overload the Factory Driver Circuit. He then installed a relay.

When ordering the LED Lamps you chose Flood or Spot. I don't want to blind on coming traffic but when driving country roads I want the ditch illuminated. The RAM head lights do little to help when rounding a corner, Now I can see what I am about to run over while turning.

Very nice. I can't imagine, not using relays when supplying that much current.
Sounds like a good setup.
Not sure if I'll connect to the high beam system yet. Advantages both ways.
Mine are currently powered by my up fitter switches but don't like the idea of having to switch off and on manually, especially if having to turn off for oncoming traffic.
Thanks.
