Years ago mom would mix about a cup of bleach with a gallon of water then pour it into the tank. Then fill it and pump it thru the lines with the water heater bypassed. Until you got a good bleach smell at the faucet. Let it sit over night then drain the tank and fill with fresh water drain that and refill. Run the pump and turn all faucets until the tank was empty.
Then she would mix a box of baking soda with about a gallon of water and pour it into the tank. Pump that thru the lines and let that sit over night. She would say that would "sweeten" the lines. Drain the tank and one more flush and it was good to go.
