Hot water works gas,not electric
After much trial and error, I know I drained the water heater at least 5 times! Very . The water heater worked twice on electric but will not work now. Works on gas. I have checked the fuses and breaker. Anything else to check? Thanks!

all I can think of is to make sure the toggle switch for fireplace and water heater is on water heater, and the hot water switch is on. I have to have both switches in the correct position to get power to the water heater. The water heater switch glows when it is powered telling me it is on. Also it can take a lot longer to heat the water with electricity than propane. If the switch lights up, but the water still won't get hot, you may have burned out the element. I have also seen a push in type circuit breaker on the water heaters usually near where the electricity enters the heater. push to reset if it is popped out.

Be sure you don't have it turned on without water in it. It will fry the electrode.

Hi Susan,
When this happened to me I found that there is a bolt threaded into the body of the water heater with a ground wire attached to it. That bolt had broken off apparently due to being over tightened in assembly. I just grounded the wire elsewhere on the heater along with another ground and it has worked fine ever since.

I left the water heater on all night to see if the water would heat, it has been pretty cold here. Still nothing I looked for a reset button or loose wire and do not see anything. Are the elements the same for the gas and electric? Why would one work and not the other if I had burnt the element. Anyway to check?

You might have to add this to your CW repair list as a warranty problem.

I was hoping not have to do that in case it was something I did.

There is no element for gas. The "element" is an anode or "rod" that electrically heats the water. The gas sends a flame thru a "tube" that the water surrounds.
The electric doesn't work well on mine either and is on my list when I take it in.

THANKs Tim, I thought it was odd that it worked twice and then nothing. I will look some more for a reset button if there is one. Headed home now and it is suppose to be -2 tonight so it will be the weekend before I can some more checking when it warms up.

Did you ever run the electric without water in the tank? Do you have a multimeter? I find the multimeter very handy when tracking down electrical issues. If you test for 120v AC at the heater element and you have volts, but no heat, it is probably a burnt out element. If you dont get voltage at the element start back tracking to the thermal switch, then back to the wall switch and so forth until you find the problem. you can also test your ground connection with one.

I do not think I ever ran it without water, I drained it at least 5 times ( water gushed out every time) and started over to make sure I was doing it right. I could hear it filling up.
I will try and tack down a multimeter and give that a test THANKS!!!!!!!!!

It sounds like you've checked everything else so I would guess you burnt out the element. With no water in the tank, it only takes a minute to burn it out. You can get a replacement at ACE - believe it will be a 110v 1500watt. You will need a 1.5" socket though.

Susan, It may be, MAY NOT be something you did. My electric has never seemed to work. I KNOW I did not turn it on without water. Gas works great. Check what others have suggested, then let the dealer figure it out. That's what I plan to do cause I can't figure it out either!

Susan,
Plug your multimeter into an outlet in the RV. If the element is working you should see a drop in voltage when the water heater is turned on.

Thank you! Any videos or booklets out that step you through the process, that you know of? The owners manual is not a big help.

If you have 120 volts at the element terminals and it will not heat, the element is open and needs to be replaced.
Another test would be: Turn off the circuit breaker! If you have that multimeter, set it on the resistance (ohms) setting and put leads on the element terminals. A near zero reading would indicate a good element. A very high or infinite reading would indicate an open (bad) element.
