Tire Warning

I went to pick up my 5th wheel from storage to prep it for a trip and found that the spare tire had self destructed. I recently replaced all the other tires with Goodyear Endurance ST225/75 R15E, but decided to keep the original Castle Rock spare that came with the trailer as my spare. It has 0 miles on it, has never touched the asphalt. The reason that I replaced the other Castle Rocks was because we are going to be travelling this summer and I didn't trust the original tires, even though they only have about 2000 miles on them. My wife thought I was just being paranoid and wasn't too happy when I spent $500 on new tires to replace new tires, but she sees my point now

Wow. Never seen a spare explode like that. That’s scary. I know I’m gambling with my original tires but if I make it through this year I plan to replace mine also.

Yeah, I've had a few trailer tires blow out but never had one just come apart like that without ever touching the ground before. Glad it was never driven on or that could have been dangerous and expensive!

Yikes, but super lucky it just took out itself and not a slide-out or worse when it decided to blow. Now I'm more anxious than ever to get the new Endurance installed Monday @ 1pm. Re booked installation Friday and today due to rain.

Wow, send pics to ntsb and the mfg and save the tire carcass....

Glenda-

In order to keep costs down most RV manufacturers will equip their product with inexpensive Chinese made tires. Whichever brand, they are notorious for poor even unsafe quality and are suspect from mile one. I've had mixed luck with them but I try to keep the weight in the trailer down and maintain pressure religiously. Have had no blowouts but noticed tread starting to separate and replaced tire while in campground (2 different trailers). Have a couple of friends and have met other campers along the way who have immediately replaced original tires with Maxxis or Goodyear Endurance for peace of mind. Hope this clarifies.

I've noticed that some other brands, Jayco for one, are using the Goodyear Endurance as their oem tire now. Hopefully, more brands will follow.

I noticed Keystone is using Sailun on some Montana units now. Good move.

Was there a recall on this specific brand tire ? For the reasons mentioned above , with a notice this has the potential to occur on tires never on the pavement ?
I am interested why this would take place ? Any input on this ?

I think the China tires installed at the factory are somewhat less sturdy than more expensive ones but a bigger problem is that they barely meet the weight limits of the unit they are put on. Manufacturers put on the least expensive tires their lawyers will allow so there is no safety factor. Maybe its different now but a few years ago I discovered (don't ask how) that my tires were only rated for 65 mph as well as being marginal for the load. Oh the stories I could tell!

On my current unit I made them upgrade tires before I closed the deal and don't regret it.

Stop it, Stop it. Now I’m reconsidering purchasing new tires sooner than later. That’s man toy money I’ll loose out on.

Had our 4 Endurance installed and balanced this afternoon, and there is no comparison to the previous, none. Momma Bear thought we should keep the old tires till she saw the difference especially in the sidewall, her reply was throw those junkers in the garbage, lol. Only got to tow 12 miles home with a strong cross wind, but I do believe the trailer tracked nicer and not that kinda spongy light sway type a thing. Visual is night and day and they do scream quality. Healthy upgrade or improvement if you will and middle of next month will have told the tale, but sure were not going to be disappointed...

Just returned from our first trip with our new Good Year Endurance tires on, about 400 miles. They were a big improvement over the stock tires.i am not sure it was the tires or having them balanced, or both but it was great for piece of mind also.
