We don't use a TV so have a large cabinet that we fill with junk and call our snack cabinet. I've added a shelf and railing to it. I just put up cove molding around the insideand cut a piece of MDF to fit after adding the railing.

I like the fact that you recessed the shelf so if, and only if, you decided to put a flat screen in, it would be a simple install.
