2014 sunset trail fireplace problem

I just bought a 2014 Sunset Trail 32BH. I tried the fireplace but it won’t turn on I checked the power and found I only had 38 V at the receptacle. Has anybody ever seen this before no the fix to my problem. I did run an extension cord to the fireplace and it worked perfectly.

Hello and welcome.

Just a couple things.

1 Is your camper 30 or 50 amp?
2 if it is 50 amp are you using an adapter - 30 to 50?
3 if you are on 50 amp are you sure it is wired correctly at the outlet?
4 Have you checked the campers breakers - turn them off then back on.

Good luck and let us know what you find.

Yes the camper is 30 or 50 amp. I am using 30amp as that’s the highest my generator puts out. I have checked the breakers and all are working fine. The fireplace will run if I plug it into a extension cord and into a different receptical just not the one it is suppose to be in.

Pull receptacle...and see if there is 110v going to it. May be the receptacle or connection...remember these assembliers are not electricians.

Your camper either has a 50 amp cord or a 30 amp cord. If you are indeed 50 amp and are plugged into the output of a 30 amp generator with an adapter.

Does everything else work ok? Can you run your ac?

Your Camper has 2 50 amp legs in the cord the adapter is connecting them both to 1 30 amp leg at the generator. I would try a different adapter. Could be some sort of internal damage not letting the full 30 amps thru to both 50 amp legs. Maybe one side is good and the other has a bad connection. Also if the fireplace is in a slide check other outlets that are in the slide. If you have all have the same low voltage then check under the slide for a junction box. They sometimes will get loose connections or water in them causing corrosion.

I checked voltage behind the plug and it was still 38 V. Everything else in the camper works fine the AC runs and all other receptacles are fine seems to be a problem with just this one. When I run an extension cord from a different receptacle the fireplace works fine. That makes me believe that there is nothing wrong with the power coming in to the camper from the generator

Please put the make, model, and year of your camper in your signature so we know what you are asking questions about.

I do not know the details of your fireplace but from electrical stand point if you have 38V at the receptacle the fireplace cannot work. 38V is really odd value. It may indicate:
- loose connection - unlikely - can cause a lot of heat and lead to fire
- messed up wiring - this is really crappy because a) it is hard to find, b) it may be resulting in other parts of the RV being electrically hot when they shouldn't be - you touch it and it will hurt.

Is the fireplace supposed to run on separate circuit breaker? If so I would first check the breaker itself, and the power behind it to verify that the power as it enters the breaker is 110V. If you disconnect/connect that breaker do you see any changes in voltage in other circuits, dimming/brightening of lights? If multiple outlets are connected to the same breaker - are all of them having the same voltage issues? Are all the of the receptacles in the RV having same 38V? There should be at least 3-4 separate 110V circuits in the RV, inside, outside, TV, microwave etc... Circuit breakers will appear to work correctly even if voltage is incorrect but the amperage is within the limit. If you're not comfortable with multimeter it may be safer to just go to any car mechanic and have him diagnose it. Otherwise, if both ends of breaker show 110V and other receptacles show that as well, you could open the dedicated outlet box, replace a receptacle with new one (does not need to match RV style, can be household one), check the voltage, maybe that's where the problem is.

I helps when the thread gets long and we see it in your signature. It's helps us answer the question and respond to your posts and not necessarily your thread.

Just a courtesy.

Chris, you need to follow the bad voltage back to the Circuit Breaker box. You said before the voltage behind the outlet was still 38v. (I agree this is really an odd voltage). Then find out what else is on the circuit (if anything) and test THAT outlet. Then you need to find the breaker to that circuit and test the voltage there. If still 38v, pull the breaker and test the voltage on the lugs. You can also try moving the circuit wire to a different breaker to help isolate the issue. Keep in mind you can get hurt playing with 120v CB panels. It might be better to call an electrician.

On mine I can’t run the electric water heater and fireplace at the same time. I think the switch on the control panel is a 3 position switch. I’ve had it in the wrong position before and had to scratch my head twice before I figured it out.

Same as mine: my rig is 30amp, with 3 position rocker switch 1)water heater, 2)off, 3)fireplace.
