There have been several threads on this forum and other RV forums concerning the methods of greasing wheel bearings. My 2010 Cruiser came equipped with the EasyLube zerk fittings that allow adding grease without removing the wheel.
Not particularly liking the idea of just squirting grease indiscriminately into the bearing cavity (for several reasons) I pulled my wheels, cleaned and repacked my bearings last week. I've had my trailer a little over 2 years and initially pulled the wheels and just checked for grease right after I bought the trailer.
All bearings looked good until I got to the last wheel. The outer bearing still had lots of grease on it but on inspection was terribly pitted. I mean BAD pitted and gouged! Who knows, it may well have come from the factory like this and may have lasted another 5 years.
Just knowing I was riding on this gives me the chills. Next time I buy a new trailer I'll check the bearings closely on day one. This is a good reason not to rely on just stuffing new grease into the wheel. Anyone have a good online source for Timken bearings?
This is the reason I do mine once a year. When I bought thetrailer the dealer said every two years but I guess a little over kill I will keep on top of them. Although I drive the truck more and have not done its bearings yet. For me like a lot of other things it is a peace of mind thing.
