As for where to stay, Jordan Lake is beautiful. Poplar Point and Crosswinds campgrounds at Jordan Lakeare both nice with some good waterfront sites. Only problem is that it is a state park so you must be in before the gates close at dusk.

There is also a lot to do in the NC mountains. We haven't gotten to do it yet but I hear the Maggie Valley and Cherokee area is nice. You have Grandfather mountain up there. There is the blue ridge parkway. Asheville is a beautiful area. We stayed at KOA asheville East when we went to asheville. Lots of trains in the area and you will hear them all day and night at that campground. They are nice people but the sites we were at in front were very tight. I know there are other campgrounds in the area that are better just not sure which ones. If you get up to this area, I hear Mount Pisgah inn has gorgeous views while eating. We went to hookers falls and went swimming. It was fun. People were actually jumping off the falls, we weren't that crazy but we did swim below the falls. It is a free activity but parking is very tight.
