Diesel Trucks? RAM or Ford
Narrowed down between a 2017 Ram 2500 Lauriat with Cummins with15,000 miles for $49,990 or 2012 F350 HD King Ranch with 6.7L Power Stroke 30.000 miles for $40,000. The F350 is one owner on consignment. fully loaded with plow. The RAM is purchased fleet lease. RAM will tow 1720 pounds, F350 will tow 24,000 pounds. My 5th wheel is a Crossroads Cruiser 315RL, GVW is about 13,000. Will be for occasional weekends for next year, then plan to take a trip around the US.
I work from home, so won't be adding many miles. Thoughts? Everyone I know that I talk to is either a RAM guy or a Ford guy. I'm leaning toward the F350.

I know it will be a lot of opinions. Thing is sometimes the opinions make sense for choosing one over the other. I'm really struggling with a $10K difference over 5 years in age. However the Ford cost more 5 years ago new than the RAM did last year. Financially the Ford makes sense for me I like the look much more.

I'm a GM guy but given the choices of the two, I'd go with the Ford as well.
If this is your first diesel, you will be pleasantly surprised on long hills with the pulling power. I'm not familiar with the tranny on that one. On my GM, I can put it in psuedo-manual and lock it to no higher than 5th. My Allison trans is a 6 speed with dual overdrive. 6th gear for me puts the rpm at a point where I'm lugging at anything slower than 65. I cruise normally at 65 & 1700rpm.

Chevrolet guy here to but with choices I would go for the Ford also.

Couldn't find any used Chevys or GMC? In my opinion if no Duramax/Allisons available I'd have to choose the Ram, Ford doesn't make the list.

Towing capacity
How is it an F350 super duty with a 6.7 diesel only has a towing capacity of 15,200? The RAM 2500 diesel is 17,200?

Buy the one "you like/want".
Either one will do the job for you. Don't put to much stock in some of the opinions posted here. Some are quite bias.
You will just have to shake the oats to get the chaff separated from it.

I am biased towards the F350 obviously as I love my truck, but the Ford is a bull for towing. The 6.7 diesel is great and more fuel efficient than its predecessor and the tranny has been bulletproof for me. I do believe you have much more room for movement on the price of the 2012 Ford than the dodge. Should be able to get it for at least 10% less than you indicated so would be a better price point for the amount you plan to use it.
Update: Did a quick KBB evaluation on the 2012 F350 King Ranch and wow, dealers are still getting $45k to $50k+ for those. So your price isn't bad.

BIG RED FLAG for me is the plow comment on the ford... if it's a guy doing his driveway once in a while - maybe ok, but someone doing 20 parking lots a day ?!? no thanks...
and that's from a guy who had 4 or 5 ford diesels - 7.3, 6.0, and 2 6.7's - and had great towing service out of each! the 6.7's towed 13k+ in 6th gear with tall 3:55 gears without a hiccup - never even used tow/haul! LOVED that truck!
But the cummins in our coach has really, really impressed me pushing 40k+ lbs of battleship around like it was nothing...

If your not dead set on a diesel,you could get a brand new gas F350 with the 6.2 monster for less.

Better yet, he could wait for one of these.
Second generation Eco-Boost is in the new 2018 Expedition & Navigator, High out put 450 hp and 510 lbs of torque. I would be looking for this to be coming to the F-150 soon.

Thank you all for sharing your experiences and opinions. I have decided to go with the Ford.
KBB is about $10K more than I'm paying for the truck which doesn't include the add on's. There is a Retrax Pro tonneau cover without a scratch on it and it glides back and forth like it's brand new. That runs about $1,500.
I was only a bit concerned about the plow. I've been buying cars from the dealer where it's consigned for 15 years from the same salesman. He's never lied to me or sold me something he didn't back up. He was honest and told me he knows nothing about trucks but at a minimum the guy consigning the truck is from an affluent town and owns a business making about a 1/2 million a year. I think he uses the truck to go to the country club and plow his driveway, home depot runs. He's buying an SUV, he has no need for a truck any more.
I think overall it's a good decision for me. I'm getting it way below book. If nothing else I can use it for a trade on something newer down the road and not lose any money.
As for a gasser. I've had one and really prefer a diesel for towing.
Again, thank you all for your time and experience! As always it's nice to get real world experiences.

I've got a 13 250 6.7 SRW SB, came from a 04 6.0 Excursion, if I could afford it I'd have someone do the conversion, loved that truck. One big change was the fuel tanks, went from 44 to 26 gallons, which on a 3000 mile tow trip forces you out of the truck at least once every fours. That actually turned out to be a bonus more then a hindrance I thought it was going to be. Driving solo I'd rather have the 44 but with 4 bladders the 26 gallons worked out well and kept us all more fresh.
Any of the big 3 3/4 tons' would do the job well, and anyone of them can be a lemon, but you'll be happy with the Ford. Enjoy the ride!
