Roadside assistance? Experiences AAA vs others

My husband and I are about to embark on our RV adventures and we are examining the options for roadside assistance (on the theory that if we buy it we won't need it). Has anyone had any particular experiences good or bad related to the insurance company you are with? We've been less than pleased with Kemper in general and are considering jumping ship. In the meantime, our AAA is offering us an assistance package for an additional $50 a year. Is it worth it?

Once you decide where you will be traveling (what states) get in touch with the AAA home and ask them if they have coverage in those states.

I did that few years back. Glad I did. Most of the states we were going thru had limited to no coverage.

I have roadside assistance with my insurance (USAA), costs me about $15 a year on each car and my camper.
I've used it several times and once when I blew a tire on the road pulling ny camper.
Was worth it to have someone come out since it was over 100 degrees and I was on the side of the road, inches from traffic.

I've had good results with AAA, they paid a $1200 tow bill for me. I think that if AAA has no one available in an area they will reimburse you if you have to pay. That is what they did for my $1200 charge, none of their tow companies had a truck available to tow. Plus I like their maps and tour books.

I have Good Sam Roadside Assistance. Covers all my vehicles including TV and my wife's car. Used it twice with no problems. What I did find out is, the tow company has contracts with most of the major roadside assistant programs. So I could also have used my AAA card, On Star, All State and many others. He covered them all.

We have Good Sam and used it once for a blow out. We were very pleased with the response time and service.

Geico covered all of my expenses, even a couple of new tires. The good thing is I had no clue they would cover any of it.

Travel insurance

I am sure AAA is great for many reasons, but we have not had a good experience when calling them in a rural area on a weekend. They did not call back to say they couldn't find anyone and left us hanging in the middle of the road with dark approaching. Fortunately, some local guys helped us get to the campground and get the truck to a shop. AAA said they could not find anyone in the area, but later we realized there was a wrecker some distance away on their list that would have come.
Another time we were on a busy highway and we had no trouble getting AAA to come.
We have Good Sam's now.

Check your auto insurance, you may be covered by them.

We use Coachnet. I researched AAA and Good Sam, but Coachnet has the best coverage.

My neighbors are new Rv owners. they made their first cross country trip last month, and ran into an issue in Nebraska, (ran over a spare tire on the highway) and bent a crossmember under the rv. They had coverage from Good Sam, and without getting into much detail, told me that they were on and off the phone with them for over 2 hours with no help. A trucker happened to pull over, and direct them to a local freightliner dealer a mile or so away. they limped the rv there, and had to leave it there for repairs, and finish their trip in the jeep they were towing behind.
They said they were calling and cancelling their membership.
I'm sure that everyones service varies by location, some good, some bad.

I also have USAA for $15 dollars per insured vehicle.
Beware that AAA is no good for RV's here in New England. So they don't have national coverage.

I have Good Sam coverage. Last year the strap broke on my fuel tank on my tow vehicle and we started leaking diesel. We were able to make it off the interstate into a parking lot. Good Sam paid to have the truck towed, but not mt 5ver. The lot owner said we couldn't leave it there, so I paid to have it towed home. Fortunately only about 40 miles. Later, I submitted a claim to them with a copy of the policy that said they would tow your trailer if your tow vehicle was disabled. They did reimburse me for the $250 tow bill, but they also did leave us initially stranded.

They did tow the truck to my mechanic, and another time, me niece broke down, they towed her truck to my house, so its not just the nearest repair faciluty.
