Tires of Tow Truck
Any recommendations for tires for my tow vehicle? My 07 Avalanche had Goodyear tires that were in good shape, but before going to Alaska we decided to get new tires. They are B.F. Goodrich and the worst tires I've purchased in over 50 years of buying tires. They are much more worn at 30,000 mi. than the old ones were at 34,000. We are towing a 2012 Z-211RD.

Know of of few Rver's that use the Firestone Transforce LT tire and are very happy with them.

I put a set of Dueler A/T Revo 2 right before the holidays. (Firestone actually had a Black Friday Sale!)
Not yet towed, but will post my experience once I get my trailer on the road.
Good reviews on Tire Rack so we will see.

I use the Hankook AT's. They have worked flawlessly when pulling our rig.

I've had good luck with the Cooper Dicoverer AT3's. Had them on two vehicles. 50,000 mile warranty. Quiet and great wearing tire. I went with Cooper Discoverer ST Maxx this time around and very pleased so far.

Love my Michelins! Much better traction than O.E.M. Bridgestone tires, and warranty on them is better than most other brands.

Firestone Transforce LT tires on my truck. Tires are holding up great and also get good traction in the snow (important for me up here in WI).

Thats good to know. I supposedly "upgraded" to the Revo's that were quite a bit more per tire.
Next time, Transforce.
Can someone post the mileages they're getting out of their E rated tires. I was a bit concerned on the lack of tread warranty. My father-in-law is a a retired tire engineer and he told me the lack of warranty is probably because of the variables in use of these HD tires.

I run Cooper Discoverer H/T Plus on my 07 Avalanche. They have been great towing so far but thats been with my car trailer not my 290BH as I don't get that until Friday.
Even for a 20's I was surprised how well they did. I've had then on since July 2013, very quiet, great in the snow and even on a muddy job site.
I decided to use them as one of my friends has them on his Duramax towing his toy hauler.

I use the Michelin LTX M/S2 also. After 2 of the OEM Continentials had tread separation in under 18k miles I replaced all 4 with the Michelins. The Continentials were just out of the recall range for that problem and they refused to do anything other than a piddling amount for useage toward a new maypop. No thanks.

I've been running BF Gooderich AT KO's on my 07 Duramax for the past 3 years. I have no complaints with the exception of poor traction in snow. I'll be changing these tires out in the next couple of weeks and installing Goodyear Wrangler Duratracs.

I have a set of BFG's on my truck and the dot date puts them at 3 years old and they are weather checked on the sidewalls.

I have used Michelin LTX M/S 2 for the last 8 years on two different vehicles. THey are E rated and milage wear is great. I get 12 mpg (us) pulling a 12000 llb 5th wheel. I will buy the same tire again.

I currently have a set of Nitto Terra Grapplers on my truck. Second set and they wear just fine. Since we got the new fiver, was a bit concerned with them being load range D and having quite a bit of sidewall (315/75R16). Have a set of the Goodyear Wrangler Duratracs on order in 285/75R16, should be in by this Friday - E rated with very good reviews on other forums. Having more bite is a bonus.

I purchased Bridgestone Dueler AT Revo 2's in December. Only towed once to get my trailer out of storage and can definitely feel the difference in the stance and handling.
Not much thought went into the decision process other than decent reviews on tirerack.com and I got them almost 1/2 off on a black friday sale+rebate.
No regrets so far. Rides rougher than the LT tires and lost about 1 mpg, but worth the tradeoff. Not played with the pressure yet.

OhioMark,
Hope you knew that these tires were available in both P-passenger and LT- light truck types.
I personally wouldn't pull a trailer with just P tires anymore.
My LT tires have a 90psi limit vs a P tire which will vary between approx 32-45 lbs.
You have a special, high pressure valve stem for LT tires to handle the psi differences.
I hope all works out but even if you go to the Bridgestone website with your truck, their recommendation is with LT's.

Bob,
Thanks for catching my error. What I mean was the ride is stiffer than the P rated that came OEM. Yes, you have to specify when ordering the tires you want LT/ E load tires. They don't have them sitting around at the store usually.
Actually, Ive a resource for tire questions here, my father-in-law is a retired tire engineer from Firestone/Bridgestone.
We've had more than a few discussions as to why they still put P tires on 1/2 ton trucks. I would guess average rv owner won't even think about if the tires can handle their trailer when that by that shiny new F150/1500/Ram/Tundra/Titan unless you subscribe to this forum and/or you have a family member in the tire business.
We can only speculate car companies use P tires to boost their MPG's for CAFE standards and of course, they're cheaper.
Sounds like you have alot of experience with these tires, can you tell me how many miles you get out of a set. I wasn't completely suprised, but a bit disappointed you don't get any tread warranty on these tires, especially for the premium price.

I'm pulling either my 24' boat or the 32' toy trailer when towing.
I like the Korean made Hankooks. They wear well and have a good ride but I'm not using an all terrain tire either.
Even with pretty heavy loads, I get between 40-45k on a set. Rotation every 10k or so.
Glad it worked out for you.

Just bought a set of Cooper Mud Claws. E rated and 10 ply. Have not towed with them yet but can already tell a difference when driving in the wind. Truck always did seem to be a wind sail before. Not now.
