Propane Tank Connector Colors

Thought I would share this info. While changing my propane tank connectors I discovered the differences in the connector colors refer to it's properties:

Different colors for the Type 1 Propane connectors are based on the spring tension and flow rate. The light green connectors are rated for 200,000 Btu per hour. The black are rated for 70,000-100,000 Btu per hour. The dark green are rated for 450,000-500,000 Btu per hour. The Red connector is the strongest spring and is often used for high pressure adapters and T-fittings.

Also, the connector has an internal thermal disconnect. In case of a tank fire the connector closes and stops the flow of propane. Not sure exactly how that works and hope I don't have to find out!

I've never seen any thing but black connectors either.
My question is---what are they using them for , and would there ever be a need for the different colored ones on our campers?

My guess is they are used as pressure/flow limiters. If the RV doesn't ever need whatever the max pressure/flow that a propane tank puts out it might be easier on the regulator (and safer) and equipment to limit it at the tank. Just a guess. If an RV comes with certain colored connectors I'm sure the mfg. used what was required. If someone was bored they could add up the flow rates of all their propane appliances and see where it falls in relation to the connector color.

Guessing it depends on what the potential gas flow is in your RV. Mine has heat, hot water, oven/stove and two outside connections. Mine are the dark green ones.

I also have the dark green Acme Fittings. I learned something today!
Maybe it has to do with whether or not you have an external connector for an outside grille. I have heard people complain that their griddle doesn't get hot enough, when they add a griddle that needs a lot of flow.
I use a Blackstone griddle/grille, and it works pretty well.
Good stuff to know, thanks, Jim!
