Water Heater Check Valve Leaking Antifreeze

I leave the drain plug loose in my water heater after draining it for the winter. Today I noticed a few drops of nice pink antifreeze had dripped out of it. Apparently, the hot side check valve is leaking antifreeze into the tank. Is the check valve necessary for anything except winterizing? Can I just leave it and add a third shutoff valve for winterizing? Any other suggestions? Thanks

I noticed mine is doing the same thing. I picked up a new valve from Amazon last fall. I haven't got around to changing it yet. Waiting for it to warm up some more.
You can replace it with a 1/4 turn shut off valve if you want to.

The check valves do go bad. I have had to replaced a few. The last one came apart internally and stopped the flow of water. I removed it and stripped the inside out the reinstalled it while on a vacation. Happy wife Happy life. If you want to eliminate it you could replace the upper "tee" with a valve like the lower one.

Thanks for the input guys! I think I'll eliminate the check valve and add a new 1/4 turn valve in the line. Seems like lots of people have problems with the check valves.

I tried searching this site for help before I posted this. Then while looking for parts on Amzaon, I found this link: https://www.crossroadsowners.com/for...ent-11807.html Looks good to me!

As a side note, I was always told to never put antifreeze in the water heater tank.
Does your water heater manufacturer say this is ok?
Maybe I was misinformed.

The original post said “ Apparently, the hot side check valve is leaking antifreeze into the tank.” So, they didn’t mean to let antifreeze go into the tank. The bypass prevents antifreeze from accessing the tank so you don’t waste six or ten gallons of antifreeze when winterizing. I don’t think it would hurt anything except wasting antifreeze.

When i used antifreeze to winterize i would let the antifreeze into the water heater until it ran pink out the drain then bypass the water heater. So there would be some antifreeze in it. Just flush it out in the spring.
