Water heater drain plug
I left the right tool at home, didnt want to go back and get it. Seems I might have squished the water heater cap just a bit.
Dealer only replacement or will a plug from Lowes work just as well?

Did mine yesterday. An odd size hex, but it looks like 3/4" pipe threads. Bring the old one to Lowes. Stay with plastic, and you'll be fine. I wouldn't use brass, you might set up a corrosion issue. It is awkward, I'd like to plumb in a drain valve instead of a plug. Anybody done that?

I installed a quarter turn boiler drain valve. Much easier to drain. Been in for 4 years now with no corrosion issues.

Stan, i looked those up and they seem really large to fit in the tight space of my heater. The gas line runs ring in front of it.
Harley, not finding one that would seem to work for a water heater.

There may have been changes to the heater design. Mine fits right under a shroud. I got it at HD.

I put in a threaded plastic fitting in the drain plug that I could attach a short piece of high temp hose to. I then put a brass ball valve at the end of the hose. No dissimilar corrosion worries and the short hose fits inside the door neatly. Now I just open the door and open the valve. The hose is just long enough to allow room for the valve and so water doesn't shoot all over the place, I can point it at the ground

This set up would also be good for blowing the crap out of the bottom of the heater core when cold.

I like this idea. Easy to drain when leaving a site and heading home.
Have any pics?

That looks like a winner Mark.
I heard there should an anode of some sort in the water heater to prevent corrosion. Usually they need to be replaced occasionally. Any idea if these water heaters have them and where they might be.

My water heater does not have an anode. Maybe others can answer that.

Marty and Martha, that looks great. An anode and drain valve in one. I'll be ordering one.

If you have a Suburban water heater with a steel tank, you need one.. If you have an Atwood water heater which have aluminum tanks you don't need one.
Here's a good video on anode rods.

Thanks for clearing that up John. I'll have to check which one I have. Don't recall at the moment.
