It's possible that the switch is bad. It should be easy to disconnect the wires from the switch and check it for a short with an ohm meter.
If the lights are in the extended part of the awning, I think it would more likely be a short in the wiring. A wire could have gotten pinched in the arm of the awning. You can also easily check for a short in the wiring with an ohm meter after disconnecting the wires.
