Is converter out?
Recently checked camper that was plugged in to shore power, no lights or power. Found battery was dry, so filled it with distiller water and charged it with shop charger. Replaced in camper but nothing changed no lights no power to slides. Next day, dim lights and very weak slides (moved out bout inch then closed). So how to check converter? And how to replace if bad?

Pull the battery, maybe beyond charging. Have Auto Zone, or a parts house check it.

Seems to me if you measure the battery voltage while disconnected (i.e. you should get 12v or less) and then connect it and plug unit in, you should see 13 - 14 volts indicating the converter is charging.

If the battery is bad, it will do like you discribed. Went through that with my Cruiser several years ago

It said good but when you hit the load button on the meter it went dead. As a matter of fact, brought it home last night plugged it in, blew a breaker in the housed to the fifth wheel. I Went to get another gfi , tried to bring in the slide would not budge light dim. Installed the new Out let plug and every thing worked, tonight all is oKay. As Stan said you can check the Converter with a meter when hooked up to shore power at the battery.

Battery is bad. I would replace it before looking at replacing converter.

Cowboy, take your battery out and take someplace where they can do a load test on it.
Like I told you before, I think you are going to have to pop for a new battery.
That thing has probably got at least one dead cell.
Five years on an RV battery is a long time. Especially if it's the junk that comes with the trailer.

Ok Guys, just to let you know, I bought a brand new battery and the only difference was the lights were a lil brighter. Slides still weaker than usual, no a/c, but microwave workerd and coffee pot worked . My son came over and said his battery dead years ago, doesn't worry about cause he uses shore or campground power. He checked converter power in and was 120v, but power out was zero! Bought a new converter and all is well now, whew!

So I am curious as to how hard it was to replace the converter. It seems like it was done fairly quickly. My rig is the same and may need to do this as well. Any insight?

The ac thermostat works on 12v and wasn't working cause converter wasn't putting out the 12v side, so no ac. Slides were using only the battery power. All works as before now! Great!

Hey cowboy, glad all is well now.
You got it figured out and fixed. Even if we all did badger you into buying a new battery.

In spite of the claims, these converters are not that great and will boil off water from the battery. Then the battery fails and that causes the converter to fail. Best advise is to always keep the battery water full and for long term storage, turn the converter off with the circuit breaker and use a good aftermarket battery tender to maintain the battery w/o water loss.
